I am trying to get my pedigrees in order for ALL the babies born here since 2005. I know who has what parents. The question I have is the Dam always listed on top. I was following Dark Star pedigree which shows the dam on top.

I have seen them both ways and a lot of rabbit and cavy peds have the sire on top, but I prefer them dame on top like most are.

Shoots gives you either a pink or blue card depending on the sex of the animal. If it is a black for ex. there will be a black sticker dot, white dot for a white and a red dot for a beige. They list the color of the ancestor. Now I have 3 standard males from them who all share a common grandparent and on two of then that one is listed on the bottom but on 1 that same grandparent is listed on top so I wouldn't think there is a distinct top/bottom pattern signifying male or female due to the same chin being listed either or between the 3 pedigrees...I hope I didn't confuse you with how I explained it...

Thanks everyone. I am just going to assume that the dam is listed on top since Dark Star and Bowen's is listed like that.

Well, as mentioned, it isn't always. I've received about 75% dam on top. The other 25% have been sire on top and as mentioned by JAGS, dam on top is pretty chin specific as many other breeds put sire on top (including dogs) so anyone who had prior knowledge to that before making chin pedigrees may have made theirs more like another animal. Generally breeder specific, so if it's not listed call and ask. It's not worth messing records up for long term. Records are only meaningful if they're accurate!

I believe Shoots' pedigrees are Dam on the top - since I made my pedigrees almost exactly like theirs. But if you ask them, they can confirm.
For the sake of whoever I give an animal to - I have a tiny D next to the dam and an S next to the sire on my pedigrees.
