We left the house around 11 this morning and returned around 3. In that time the dog somehow got all the way up to the very back of the counter and stole about 20 or so christmas cookies. There were maybe three with chocolate on them and the rest were sugar. I called our emergency vet which is well known and highly reccomended and she told us that as of now it isn't an emergency. He just seems kind of down like he isn't feeling great but je isn't very lethargic or vomiting or anything like that. She said we can give him some boiled chicken tomorrow.

I'm really worried still. He is about 60 lbs. Anyone have an advice or thoughts?

I had a miniature schnauzer years ago, that managed to get up on the kitchen counter and eat half of a chocolate cake. I was sure it was a death sentence, but she never even got ill.

I would just watch your dog as recommended, for any signs of illness. Does he have the same energy, eating normally, bowl movements typical...that would be an indication that you should seek vet treatment. Otherwise, he should be fine.

yes I took him out about 45 minutes ago and he had a regular bowel movement, He just seems kind of sleepy but he is responsive and alert when you talk to him like usual. He probably just feels off?

The amount of chocolate in the cookies is probably not enough to hurt your dog. He probably has a tummy ache and a sugar crash. He would probably need about 6 ounces of pure baking chocolate (even more if it is milk chocolate or anything else) to get to toxicity.

The real danger is dark chocolate or baking chocolate. Milk chocolate isn't as serious.

While not good for them, youre probably ok. Just be watchful.

My schnauzer was really sensitive to food and ate M and M's. He was in the hospital before Christmas but we don't know how
many he got. And he got really sick so it was obvious something was really wrong.

I wouldn't worry. I think it's just tummy ache from too much junk food. give him a few hours.

My dog enjoys boston cream donuts. The brat got 2 a week apart. First one was on the table in a box. Second one was on the breakfast bar in a bag....still trying to figure out how he managed the second.

Your pup should be fine from the chocolate. He just is trying the "I'm sick and you can't fuss at me for eating those cookies Mom.After all it's your fault that I got them. You know a countertop, dishes, metal bars, etc are not gonna keep me out of that cookie jar!" LOL yes he's just like a young'un done ate too much and got a bellyache but it's "all your fault and you can't fuss at me cause I'm sick".Gotta love 'em!

Thanks for all the reassurance guys : ) he has seemed alright tonight . . Up and around and doing crazy zipping dogs on the rug as usual. I'm so relieved he's okay...back to baking..sheesh. this time ill put them in our safe!

If he seems to have loose stool you could always give him plain cooked white rice, when my lab had an upset stomach thats what my vet suggested to give him to "bind him up" aka get his stool back to normal. The blandness won't agitate their stomachs.

Also, I know pepto bismol (sp) was included in that suggestion as well, I'm not sure what the dosage was though.

Googled it for you, theres a whole URL dedicated to it:

Thanks! I did wind up giving him tums. He seems okay. He ran around a ton and puked once. Now he seems cranky but okay haha
