I currently have a female standard grey. I just got her today and she is a total sweetheart. But I have the opportunity to get a male mosaic for a really good price. I am not interested in breeding them.

Would this be a crazy idea? It is difficult keeping them apart? I have ordered a FN 142 so could keep them separate but would that be enough space for them? Do you just alternate their free time? Would they be able to spend any time together without worrying about babies? LOL!

As much as I would absolutely LOVE another chin, I don't want to jeopardize my little girl. :)

No, they could not be together at all, not even for play time. It only takes 1/2 a second for babies to be on the way.

Keep all girls...that's the best way to go. I love having females in pairs and in community cages...they get to be very comfortable with one another. No fighting, no worries about little babies...just happy girls. There's one cage of old girls ranging in age from maybe 9 to 14 or 15...they LOVE each other. All they do is groom and cuddle (and destroy toys and things.)

I highly recommend keeping all females. It'll be much less worry and less work than having a boy and girl together. Males and females are the riskiest pairing to keep together for sure.

For ease of care, definitely all girls. You could get a boy, but there could be no contact at all. No shared play time, and make sure you block off access to the other sex's cage during play time as they can breed through the bars if they can reach each other.

I have 5 chins, all girls. It's just easier.

Of course though, even with any chins, there's no guarantee that your chin will get along with another one. Regardless of which sex it is.

One other thing I suggest is waiting on the second chin. You just got your first one, let her bond with you first before trying to intro her to another chin. If you get your chin another friend, they do tend to bond more to the chin than to the owner.

Forget about the low price, it doesn't matter. Believe me, you will find plenty of free chins. You need to stick to what will be the best fit for your household and lifestyle. You just got your girl chin, wait and get bonded to each other, don't rush.

Thanks so much for all the info everyone. I am going to pass on him at this time. I thought it was a crazy idea. :p

Allie is such a sweetie. After I typed this message I went into the room to check on her and she was out and at the bars. I approached her slowly. She was not afraid at all. I was able to take her out and gave her a little ear rub. She was lapping it up. LOL!

I realized that I would rather give her ALL the attention and love that she so deserves. I shall spoil her rotten. :D

I went from one male to three males and now I am getting two MORE males for free! So, people are right, you can find free chins. Especially the pet kind... Hopefully that sounds right. I am very excited, I get them on Christmas Eve. My best friend is picking them up in Chicago for me and going to meet me in South Bend! I love it! I am so excited to have more boys.

Hey, if at a later time, you'd decide to house opposite sex chins, don't let everyone scare you away. There are plenty of us who have males and females in non-breeding situations. I have 2 males and 4 females. My boys have playtime seperate from my girls, and they're housed in a split Marshall's Penthouse, aside from one of the girls who is by herself due to wanting to show her. You just have to be willing to keep everyone apart and make sure you can spend ample time with both.
