Since I have a smaller herd (under 80 breeders including males) I would be more likely to SHOW if it was optional to claim. For me personally with just 18 kits born so far this year those that I am holding back for show-- I am also considering keeping my top kits for the year to put back into my own herd. I won't show them at the claim show for fear they may be claimed, and I'd lose that chance.

However, on the buyers side and with the "larger" breeders showing who have the numbers to take the "loss" of a claimed animal it gives those just starting out, and those looking for a quality animal the chance to purchase them at an affordable price. I think this is good for newer breeders as well.

Due to a conflict of schedules, I can't attend this year anyway.

I would never go to a claim show - I am very picky where my chins go and I would lose the option of choosing the buyer if I had one for sale at a claim show. Also right now any chin that I show I would probably want to keep especially if the chins gets a 1st or more.

I would agree with Megan. This is a perfect show for smaller breeders, hobbiest, and pet people to get some nice animals at fair prices, since there still is competition for the trophies. We would go to it no matter what, however we would probably show more if it weren't a claim show.

Being a new breeder I had initially wanted to go to Claim this year but I didn't for 1 simple reason...I didn't want to have to deal with all of the nicer animals getting scooped up on Friday night. I live close enough that I could easily have done the trip but getting a room seemed silly just to be able to get the jump on the nicer animals. WHY NOT JUST HAVE IT ALL ON SATURDAY INSTEAD OF BOTH DAYS??? I just wish it was a little more simple. I don't usually have ANY problems finding nice animals to blow money on anyway...LOL

Not all the nicer animals are claimed on Friday. Many of us breeders don't come until Saturday morning. Last year we claimed the champion male of show for that very reason. You might be surprised if you can come :)

I'll be there tomorrow. It's our first show, so we're more going to see what it's all about, buy some chins, and see what we have to do to get some of ours into some shows next year.

That was promising to hear ChinchillasByDesign that not all the good animals will be taken tonight! Thanks!

I personally like the mandatory claim show. I only show the animals I am willing to risk losing and I know what I have in mind for buying. I believe there was only 2 or 3 animals claimed tonight out of the 66 so far. Also this year they have up the price to $250 for sale animals.

Don't get me wrong...I am sure that there are still nice animals available to claim on Saturday and I am glad to hear you were able to get something nice last year but honestly there had to be at least one or two that were already claimed by the time Saturday rolled around that just maybe you wouldn't have minded having... I really respect you Nicole and I think you are AWESOME towards new people especially but I just can't handle seeing something already sold that I didn't get a chance at....It would bug me too much. Just being honest here. It is like being let out of the starting gate a minute later than everyone else. Please correct me if I am wrong as I have never actually gone to a Claim Show yet but that is just the way I am assuming things work with it. That is why I just think it would make so much more sense to just keep it simple and open the claiming up the day of the show instead because yes I do think it would be a great place to get some nice chins but I am just turned off by the Friday night part is all.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I like it the way it is. When I was starting out, I made sure to arrive at the beginning of claim, to have a chance at what I wanted. Heck, one time I was next door to the show, having dinner and Randy came in and told me about an animal. I left dinner, went next door to claim it, and then went back to dinner. Many times, the top animals aren't claimed until after the show starts. It all depends on who is there and what they are looking for.

I see where you are coming from, but, I love the claim shows. They are the most informational packed shows you can go to. Many times the judge will allow people back with them while they are judging so you can see first hand what they see, and they explain it to you as they go. Is there any better way to learn? Many of the top animals are passed over and go unclaimed until the show progresses. In fact last year the reserve grandshow that Becky claimed wasn't claimed until late in the show. The claiming starting at night isn't all bad, some people will use up all their money buying animals on Friday, then on Saturday top animals are up for grabs and less people to buy them :)

Also this year they have up the price to $250 for sale animals.

Where do you find this information? This is the first I have heard of the maximum claiming price being raised from $200. I hate to complain but this is one of the beefs I have with some shows...they just are not advertised well and really with so many outlets for advertising and spreading information by word of mouth (MCBA and ECBC Magazines and websites as well as this and other forums), there really is no excuse for not getting the word out there. Sorry - just needed to vent that it is exasperating getting information about upcoming shows.

Personally I have never liked the Friday claim event. While I understand the many factors leading up to a sale such as a color, ***, size, or factors of adding strengh to a line, it's a very long drive for southern, western, and east coast people. It's a really long drive for me. Anywhere from 10 to 12 hours depending on traffic.

Out of fairness to those traveling, I would like to see claiming the day of the show. But that too has it's problems. People being late to show up and needing to groom. Perhaps a half hour prior to classification all animals would have to be in show cages and ready for claim sales.

Perhaps it's time to ask for input from those attending or through the National chapter webpage and purpose changes during annual National Board meetings.

To answer your question: I would like to see optional claim. But thats just my opinion.

Believe me, there are PLENTY of nice animals to grab up on Saturday. Like today, we claimed the grand show, while the show was in session! No matter what time we say animals have to be groomed and in cages for claiming to begin there will always be people who push those limits, this system has worked for years, why change it? As far as changing a "claim show" to an optional claim show....good luck with that.

I don't see the problem with it being a claim show. If you don't wanna sell it, don't enter it. There are other shows to compete in. 200 or even 250 is a good price for most mutes as a sale price anyway. I would have loved to gone but working didn't make it possible this year.

Rules for local field days and claim shows are up to the discretion of the people putting on the show and are not a National board decision. Any changes to this show would have to be made by the Ohio Chapter. On the other hand our Michigan show will be optional claim so plan on making it to the Michigan show. As far as posting show info there is no problem getting it done other than the fact that someone needs to get the information to Jim and Nichole in a timely manor. Its very hard to get the info out unless you are informed of what is happening. As far as all the good animals being claimed Friday, very seldom are many claimed until Saturday. I have claimed 3 Grandshows at this show all midway thru the show on Saturday.

I did not find out until we got to the show that they raises the limit.

I think it was John's idea to raise it so he just did. Next year I will make sure to have the limit listed on the website. But yes Juanita I agree that over all things could be advertised so much better!

I know one of the factors why I didn't attend was lack of information on the show. The date wasn't released until just a few weeks away. Granted while it is "typically" on "this day" it helps to have a date set and listed well enough in advance for people to make plans to attend.

For myself personally I had another event to attend with the dog rescue I work with that is very dear to my heart--- and I had that event information months in advance so I confirmed with them that I would attend with my foster dog.

Just want to put my two cents in before I forget about this thread. I personally think that the claim show works great the way that it is set up. I have been to so many shows and wanted purchase animals from breeders to be told over and over again "Not For Sale". I like the fact that I don't have to go through the disappointment of not being able to buy the animals I want - everything is for sale. If you don't want to sell your animals, that's fine, don't show there, support the other shows!

As others have said - the "best" animals aren't claimed on the first night, many don't even bring their animals until the next morning. I don't go to the show looking to purchase the grand show - I go to look for animals that will fit well in my lines and have the traits I'm looking for in that line. For instance, the grand show champion this year is much lighter than any of the standards in my herd - I mostly have dark and extra dark animals, I couldn't use her in my standard lines, so she wasn't an animal I was looking for, though she's absolutely gorgeous.

I understand that it's difficult to get there on a Friday night - trust me, it's an 11 hour drive for me, I usually leave at 4-5am on Friday to be able to get there to see what's on the table and to help set up. I don't think that Friday night set up should be changed either, it's so much more lax on Saturday morning when you're not rushing to get all of your paperwork in.

My only suggestion would be to consider the auction process in the claim, though it may not work and may be too much of a hassle. The $250 limit is great, I'm very happy that the limit has been raised, but considering some may be willing to pay more than $250 on an animal - why not allow the animals to be auctioned up until 30 minutes after the show? That way people can't say they don't have a chance at the animal. It will bring more money in for the chapter, more money in for the seller. There was certainly one animal I would have paid more than $250 for at this last show, probably would have went up to $350, because she would have worked great in my lines, but I didn't get the chance to get her. That would have been an extra $10 in the pocket of the chapter if the other person who claimed her would have bid against me. It may be too much of a hassle, but I've always liked the way you can bid for animals at Nationals.. I think it's a great idea. I guess the entire idea of the claim show was to be able to go and get animals for a limit, allowing the smaller breeders to get a cut in the pie, so my idea may go completely against the reasoning, but it's something that I would personally be up for.
