I don't normally have many (if any) family grievances to vent about, but one is really getting to me today.

We live in PA and my family lives 6+ hours away in upstate New York. My Grandmother recently moved into assisted living and so there is a lot of furniture in her house that needs to be dealt with now.

All my cousins and I picked out what meant most to us, what we could use best, etc. Of course we have the added burden of driving 6 hours to go get the things we want before the house is sold next month. But no big deal, my fiance managed to get a Saturday off of work (which is a monumental), reserve a truck and plan the trip to get the furniture.

So this is all supposed to happen this Saturday and I now find out today that one of my cousins planned a baby shower for her friend that day-- at the same time Ben is supposed to be arriving for the furniture, and she's holding it in my Grandmother's home.

So basically I'm being told that no, we can't get into the house to get what was promised to us because a non-family member's baby shower will be going on.

And on top of that, one of my other cousins was supposed to be there to help Ben load up the truck because a lot of the furniture is very bulky & heavy, but apparently he's unavailable now. :hair:

I know it sounds rediculous but I actually felt like crying. What a rotten situation :yuck:

That is a huge imposition, I can completely see why you would be upset.

Can't they just put all the stuff you want in one room, away from the shower? It seems weird to me to have a baby shower for a stranger in your grandma's house! What a bummer! If I were still in Rochester I'd help you move stuff out.

If it were me, I'd just show up and get the stuff out of the house. It's not your cousin's friend's furniture, it's your grandmother's, now yours.

Is the baby shower going all day long? Most I've been to only last a couple hours.
Could you just wait to pick up until after? Or before the shower even starts?

Ditto, your plans were not considered in all that, so why should you consider theirs?

I would show up and get what was given to you and heck with the cousins "friend".

I agree with the others.
Make the trip and collect the items as planned.
After all, your fiance has managed to get what is obviously an unheard of Saturday off work AND you have hired a van.

We don't have baby showers in the UK, but it seems to me as if this is a smokescreen or a deliberate act to prevent you from making that very long trip to get the things you are entitled to.

I hope things work out okay for you.

Thanks for your support everybody. We are going ahead with the trip as planned. Unfortunately there won't be any help to meet Ben when he gets there but he's determined to get everything moved & loaded up anyway.

I appreciate you listening to my venting :)

I would have done the same thing... he took off of work, so theres not much else that should be said. I would hope the party goers would at least understand the circumstance.

Are you going with him?

Are you going with him?

Not this time, we're staying home. Ben is just driving up to NY to get the furniture and then driving over to CT to pick up a bunch of things there while he has the truck. He's doing 12+ hours of driving in one day... because he's insane, I suppose, haha.

he should make the people at the shower help he load up the stuff... he can say it's a new baby game :)

Naaaa not insane, just getting the money he paid out of the vehicle. Better to get it all done in one shot, save gas, save money & if hes got the room why not?

Id much prefer killing a whole day/evening doing that verses killing two weekends or multiple days.

I just wondered if you were going to help him, what if he cant lift everything by himself? Maybe your bro would watch jake & or maybe he would go? (Although, im sure you've already thought about arrangements.) lol

I just thought I'd let everybody know that this weekend went as planned! My family cooperated and helped Ben out a lot while he was there.

So now we have new bedroom furniture! I can't tell you how nice it is to finally have a queen sized bed. I love Ben... but not enough to want to share a full sized bed with him for another 4 years, haha.

Here are some photos...

Wow... those pictures look like they're out of a catalog... totally worth it for you to get the set!

I think the kitten is the best part of the room!
But then again, I always prefer animals over furniture.

ROFL

The furniture is nice too!!
