Yesterday I came home with 2 baby boys, we were thrilled. I got them from a girl who has been bouncing around from home to home and had two mother-son pairs. They were stressing about moving, so she decided to put them in more stable homes. I have been on the lookout for some, so it was a win-win situation. Well, I brought them home and let them settle in. Today, however, I got a closer look. Let's just say my two boys are now a boy and a girl :banghead:

I can only assume the female is already pregnant...but I don't know. I've spent weeks-worth of my life preaching to people why they should spay/neuter (in the case of dogs/cats), and now I find myself in this situation.

I'm speechless...and annoyed at the girl who told me they were boys

You said 'babies' - how old are they?
Separate them now, and hope for the best!!
I'd be going back with the male, and trying to get the females mother!!

They are 4-5 months old. I'm mostly upset since we wanted two to keep each other company, and now will likely have to part with one. Grrrrr. Well, besides the obvious fact that I was not expecting, nor wanting babies. I mean, if they happen they'll certainly be well cared for and sexed correctly. I mean I've never seen the underside of a chin before today and even I knew something wasn't right!

Well time to start reading up about breeding! The FAQs here on this forum are a great place to start out with. Sorry you got put in this sticky situation.

I'm assuming when you say something isn't right, that you mean they look different from each other right? One would have a gap between the cone and anus if it's a boy, and the girl shouldn't have much of a gap.

Hopefully they haven't successfully bred, but be prepared just in case. That's pretty young to be pregnant, so just keep an eye on her in case she is.

why dont you just get him neutered instead of getting rid of him????

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've read so far, neutering is not generally in the best interest of the chin. I don't know of any vets in the area that I'd be comfortable with either...

Luckily the cage we got has movable shelves...we just divided the cage in half with the shelves, so they are now separate. I feel bad, now they can't play with each other :(

I'll definitely be reading up in the breeding sections.

Yes that's exactly the difference I noticed. I triple checked, he is definitely a she.

Should you need to take one of your chins to a vet, this is the good chin vet in Appleton

Recommended by Tawana, and I have been there, they were very good when I went there.

I'm not sure if they do chin neuters though.

That's interesting...I used to go there, but switched vets because of several issues there I couldn't ignore any longer. But it is good to know she has the experience (I didn't know that before). Thanks. Is Tawana a member here? I talked to her last week about some chins lol.

If you can separate them, that's best. Maybe get another cage and same sex playmates for them? This happens a lot with chinchillas. People assume that they have two boys or two girls....most of the time they figure it out after the babies have made their appearance.

I haven't had any other experiences there other than with my chin, but from what I could tell, they handled my chin very well and I was pleased. And Tawana does take her chins there as well.

Tawana is a member here too, she has just been busy with work so she doesn't get on real often. She's the one who wrote that entry in the Vet listings.
