I'm back from the beach with my dog Mudslide and as is pretty common upon our return, she coughs a little from all the seawater she wasn't supposed to have ingested.
I'm in the other room and Mudslide starts coughing and Handbag starts to make this very odd sound I never heard before, almost like a whining. Now I'm familiar with kacking, barking and that sort of chirping noise he does when he wants to come out. This was different.
I poke my head out and Mudslide is on the couch and Handbag is pressed up against the bars of the cage, standing up with his little paws extended. I just figured the coughing scared him or something.
A few minutes later I walk out and Mudslide has his nose near the bars and Handbag has his hands on Mudslide's nose, sort of massaging it and making this little cooing kind of noise, different from the first noise I heard. I was shocked because Mudslide has never paid much attention to Handbag since I got him. She is a very easy-going dog and sparring buddies with the cat. She rarely goes near the cage bars unless just passing by.
This went on for less than a minute and eventually Mudslide sauntered back to the couch and Handbag back into his hidey house. Both went immediately to sleep. Status quo.
What do you make of this? Some type of animal communication? Maybe the smell of saltwater still? (I bathed Mudslide first).
I just thought the whole thing was odd, and a little surreal. Thoughts?
