So i was spending some time with my chinchillas today when I made a disturbing discovery. Maya came up to me and reached her paws out for some food and I realized she was missing a finger! I took Maya in for a friend who couldnt care for her anymore and i dont remember her coming to me missing any fingers. I looked at pics I took of her when I first got her and it appears that she has all of her fingers. It looks a teeny bit red where her finger used to be but there is no scab or blood so I dont know when it happened and I feel horrible for not noticing sooner. She seems to be fine and doesnt favor one paw over another. Should I take her to the vet?or would that be silly since there is no wound......Has this happened to anyone else?

Many chins lose toes. As long as you don't see the bone and she is acting normal, I would not worry. Is she your only chin? Sometimes cage mates or neighbors will bite the other chin, causing missing toes.

if your cage has wire mesh flooring or shelves then Maya may have caught her toe and injured it that way.

as long as it looks like it is healing/healed well and there is no infection or swelling i wouldn't worry about a vet visit. just keep a good eye on it.

I have another chin, Cosmo but i keep them seperate since he isnt neutered yet. They are next to each other but not close enough for them to touch. I cant really tell what im looking at when i look at her toe but it doesnt appear to be a bone but im not 100%. I think something might have happened with her cage,it isnt as safe as cosmos so I will have to get her a safer one.
