Hi, I'm Chris, my girlfriend and I have recently decided that getting a chin would be a fun thing to do. I found this website through talking with someone who raises them and sells them. Right now a pressing question is where to find an affordable tall cage, or should I just make my own.

Welcome to CnH :)

Take a look at the Chin housing section or use the search function at the top of every page to check out some great cages people have here.

I'd either go for a FN 142 cage (Ferret Nation) cage, or if your really good at carpentry, possibly make one out of melamine. You'll find lots of examples of both on here.
The Melamine is what I have. They are heavy, but keep the mess to a minimum, so love mine!
Welcome to CnH!

Welcome Chris. I have 10 chinchillas and use the Ferret Nation cages. The come single level, double and even tri-level. I actually have 2 of the 3 story set ups. Check out amazon.com for prices on the FN 141 and FN 142. Some people also use quality cage. BUT some people also make their own cage. To get an idea of what you want check out the cages section for some ideas.

Again welcome to the forum to both you and your girlfriend!

Please keep in mind, Chris, while it may seem like a "fun thing to do" they can live 15-20+ years so it is a big commitment. Other than that, try craigslist. Also petsmart is great about price matching. Sometimes amazon has specials where shipping is free. I know of a couple who made their cage out of shelving and it looks really great. They just covered the ledges and bottom of the cage so the wires were covered so the chin's feet were safe.

Welcome! A lot of people here recommend Ferret Nation 141/142 (or Critter Nation, which is pretty much the same with different spacing and assembly) for its easy cleaning. There are lots of cage options though. Some people have adapted other cages such as bird cages and some use Quality Cages. There are tons of threads on various people's cages in the Housing Section. Also, I recommend checking out the Ferret Nation Club thread for tons of cool ideas on cage decorating.

Welcome!! I agree with everyone else. Do your research and make sure that a chinchilla is the right pet for you and if so, a Ferret Nation 141/142 would make a great cage. The doors open all the way which makes it very easy to clean.

Welcome to the forum! I don't think I can add anything that hasn't already been mentioned, but do your homework before you get your chin and know exactly what you are getting into. They are a lot of fun, but there are certain requirements and things you need to know about chins to keep them healthy and a companion for a long time!

Welcome!!
You should look into a chinchilla, it shouldn't be a whim type of decision. It took me about two years to actually come to get one. They take a lot of work. They need your time and commitment, but they are the best pets!
I have only had mine for about three weeks and I am in love with them. But like everyone said, do your research and ask questions! This site provides a lot of information that can help you make your decision if a chin is right for you or not!! :)
If you decide to get one, post pictures soon!!!

Also, if you decide not to go with the FN 142 you can always go with the Critter Prevue Cage at Petco/Petsmart. It is a really nice cage, I have one for my two chins because I thought the FN 142/141 was too big. I just didn't like it but everyone has their own opinions. The Prevue cage is cheeper, very sturdy, and very easy to clean!
