It seems like Burrito is not chewing on her toys. I have many things for her(Pine blocks, pumice stones, applewood peices) but they always seem to be left alone. Is there any way I can get her to start chewing her toys? Thanks.:)

I would take her in for xrays. She may be in pain and need a teeth filing. I just went through this with one of my chins. Once my chin had his teeth filed he improved 100%.

As long as she is eating fine I wouldn't worry. Some chins love to chew and others not as much. You just have to learn what's normal for her.

I rubbed a rasin on her applewood and that got he chewing for a bit so I dont think that shes in pain. I also checked her teeth and they look pretty normal. I guess she is just not a real chewer.:hmm:

I have a girl who is like that.. she will be interested for about a day and then they are pretty much left alone. My other two bonded girls destroy everything in their path

Sometimes, I've found, hanging the toys will help. If the wood gets "dirty" some of my chins will ignore it, so hanging it up ensures that it won't get dirty and they can have at it until nothing is left.

Also, you cannot tell if there are teeth issues by just looking at the front of their teeth. Usually its the molars in the very back where problems arise. If it is a teeth issue, some symptoms you could see include decreased appetite (not eating pellets/treats), pawing at the mouth, drooling, eyes watering, and grinding teeth.

This is not meant to scare you, but just to tell you my experience...

I had a girl who was not chewing and I noticed some slow weight loss on her, and kept an eye on it but thought she was new, and didnt know what toys were and was adjusting.

Well, after a bit of this, I took her in and she had root elongation. Something I can't fix for her and something, me looking at her teeth would not have been apparent.

Keep an eye on his weight. If his weight stays good, then he is just a lazy chewer.

No one should be making a diagnosis on the basis of what you wrote.

Gnawing and chewing are two different things and use different teeth. Does she use her incisors at all? How is her water consumption? She uses those teeth to move the ball.

Is her weight tending to stay the same?

As long as she is eating hay and drinking, she maybe fine, however not chewing falls within our guidelines for a vet visit/head x-ray.

That is what happened with Burrito. she was only interested when I put it in, and then she wasn't interested anymore.

She is starting to nibble on her applewood now. She drinks fine and eats lots of hay and food. I think she isn't a real chewer. The only thing she likes to chew is my baseboards in my washroom.:impatient:

Marble has his favorites and they all have to be some kind of wood with bark on it. If it's just kiln baked pine he won't bother. However he likes chewing on things I'd rather he didn't too.

Just to let everyone know Burrito chews now. :) I made her some apple twigs and chunks and she LOVES them.
