Hi all -- I've only had my male chin for a little over a week and yesterday was the first time I witnessed him cleaning "down there" ;) I wanted to make sure this was normal so I did some internet searching and came across the whole hair ring thing which I had no idea about so I have a few questions.

I got a good look at it while he was cleaning and everything looked clean, no hair rings or anything, but is this something that I need to check periodically or do I just wait until I notice an issue with it retracting or my chin cleaning excessively? If I should be checking, how often? Is this something that is bound to happen to every male chin at some point?

Thanks for any help!

The ones I find are usually at the base of the penis, which is really long. I check my pet chins once or twice a month, they are all single males but still get them on occasion. Here is a video I made of a hair ring check. Just click on the picture to start it.

How do you manage to get your guys to cooperate? Since mine is new we havent bonded and he isnt comfortable with me grabbing and holding him yet. We are still working on just coming to me or stepping on my hand so I'm concerned if I start to try to check him for hair rings hes going to freak out and not trust me or want to come to me.

You can wrap them in a towel and "burrito" them so they can't move around a lot. It is always helpful to have someone hold and another to do the hair ring check.
