So I have had Cosmo for about a year now and a friend at work discovered I had a chin. She had a female that needed a home so I figured whats one more lol. So now I have them both in one room with their cages next to each other. They seem to like each other. There was an incident where i tried to let them play together and Cosmo got in her cage and I think he was trying to mount her and they were locking mouths like they were kissing but it scared me so I immediatly seperated them.Anyways I think if i introduced them properly they would like each other. There is an exotic vet in the area so i wanted to see how skilled he was with neutering so they could be cage mates. Now I have a skyscraper from martin cage company for cosmo and mya came with a superpet cage that Im not fond of. This is where advice comes in. I was thinking about getting another skyscraper from martins cages and stacking the two(connecting them with rings of course so they are securely connected. So they would be seperate until cosmo healed from his surgery and i could probobly easily modify it so it could become one cage with all the rings and such that comes with it. Does this sound like a safe reasonable plan? also has anyone ever thought about putting a form of chin safe metal screen around their cage to help catch debris? Just brainstorming here lol.Sorry for the long post but let me know what you think. I just want my sweeties to be happy and safe.

You really should have quarantined the new chin (in a seperate room) for 30 days before an introduction. It's too late now, however you need to be on the lookout for any illness in your previous chin. There are a ton of threads about introductions here.

I dont have a chin, but from what I've seen on other threads is that chins can breed through the cages so if Cosmo is a male, maybe stacking the cages or having them side by side isn't a good idea if they're not fixed?

First and foremost, non-altered males and females should never have playtime together. I would mark the calender for 111 days since you noticed him mount her she could very well be pregnant already. It takes SECONDS for a male to breed a female. When he is neutered, you will need to keep them separated for an additional 6 WEEKS as he will still carry viable sperm up to six weeks after the surgery.

The plan for the cages does not sound like a good idea. Keep them separate for now and six weeks after you get Cosmo neutered, they can share his cage. If it's enough room for one chinchilla, it's plenty of room for two.

While it's always a good idea to do a quarantine for 30 days when bringing in a new animal, most people don't know to do it. It would have been better if you had kept them completely separate to ensure she is not carrying something, but it's too late for that now. Just keep an eye on both of them, no more playtime for them together and congrats on the new chin!

Just keep in mind that even with neutering there is no guarantee they will be able to leave together peacefully. You'll need to make sure you have room for 2 cages should that happen.

Thanks for all the advice. I really hope shes not pregnant but I will try to learn everything I need to know just in case.I had no idea it was so easy for them to get pregnant but now i know :).I think they would like each other,is their locking mouths a good thing or bad?...it seemed friendly lol. I didnt even know you could neuter a chinchilla so when I decided to take on Mya I automatically assumed they would always have to be seperate so it is nice that there is a chance now, atleast if they like each other that they can be cagemates. Its really nice to have good advice from people who really know what they are talking about.
