I just got my chin about a week ago, and I'm worried she's not happy. She has a big cage, toys galore, a wheel, hammock, and lots of ledges to jump on. I'm worried she's not happy because she barks at night between 1 and 6 am, she seems to sleep a lot day and night, an she bites at her cage. Since I only got her a week ago she's still getting use to me. I can't pick her up, but when I stick my hand in her cage and let her come to me I can pet her. I'm worried she's not getting the attention she needs because she's still scared of me, and playtime is hard because I can't pick her up. Am I doing something wrong, or am worrying for nothing? I love my little chin and want the best for her and for her to be happy.

Mine barked at night for the first week. It takes time for them to adjust to their new home, as well as getting used to you. It can take a lot of time and patience to tame your chinchilla. Just keep allowing her to approach you on her own and talk to her daily. :)

Thanks so much! What should I do about play time? Since she's not comfortable letting me pick her up yet, how can I get her out to run and play?

I read in my research before I got my Gizmo that a radio in their room helps to sooth them especially if there are a lot of outside noises. He seems to like it. And also sitting in the room with your new chinny and just talking to them to help them know your voice and to let them know you are not going to hurt them. sometimes they just need time to adjust to their new surroundings
