Hey everyone! I'm Kari, a stay at home mom to two little girls. Before kids, animals had always been my passion. Now that I'm getting a handle on this whole motherhood gig, I'm back to having small animals, Haha! In addition to our dog and cat, we recently acquired two chinchillas. They popped up on a facebook yard sale page for $30 for the pair, so I had to jump. I had always wanted chinchillas, but the start up was just too much money.

Because I jumped at the opportunity without really planning ahead (as a former employee in the pet care industry, I hate people like me) I forgot to ask some important questions. All I remembered to ask was "are they healthy?" and "are they friendly?" and the answer is yes to both. After I had them home, I realized I didn't know what sex they were. SURPRISE, a male and a female...so we should have babies soon enough. I am trying to decide how to proceed. I realize every second they are together is a chance for her to get pregnant if she isn't already, but they are best friends, and from what I have read, introducing unfamiliar chins can be quite difficult. I have been considering letting them have a litter and keeping the mom and a female baby or dad and a male? Is that crazy?

My husband and I are in the process of converting an old entertainment center into housing for them. It's huge. LOL They will love it, but I am trying to figure out how to protect the edges of the veneered wood. I'm thinking a metal corner protector. Is there another trick? All the levels and ramps that we are adding are untreated lumber, and I'm leaving them that way. I know they will get chewed, but we have no problem changing them out as needed.

Anyway, I will definitely be around, asking questions and lurking on other posts, but I just wanted to introduce myself. I hope to learn a lot!
