Hello, I am new here.. and in the hedgehog world.. I right know have30 G tank i am thinking of useing for hedgie. I was going get one of the First Pet home cage but think to much of a draft and would get sick. I have read all over about alot of peoples say should and shouldn't do. but would love more peoples thoughts about it. I am going be looking for 2 cage liners. A snuggle sack for when holding. ...Not sure on the Wheel.. so many of them out there and prices Varies so much.. And not sure on food.. i have heard about using Spikes.. then others saying Purina i believe it is.

Hedgehogs need better ventilation than an aquarium can offer. In my personal opion the large my first pet home cage is too small, the cage I have for my hegdgehog is 11 inches longer than that one and I feel as though there is barely enough room.
I have I believe six fleece liners and I would neer have any less, thinking I should make more as I change them every two days. What kind of liners are you looking into?
Also mine always has a snuggle sack, I own ALOT of those as mine likes to scratch so I am constantl repairing them. Hedgehogs are burrowing creatures, so they should have somewhere they can "burrow" at all times. It also helps to keep them warm.
As far as wheels go I originally purchased a flying saucer wheel and I regret it greatly, I should have taken the time and spent a bit more off the bat and bought a carolina storm wheel. Larry sells those in the classifieds setion of the forum. I am currently waiting for the wheel to arrive from Larry (I live in Canada and only ordered two days ago), what a waste of money the flying saucer wheel was. Conventinal bucket style wheels from a pet store are not suitable for a hedgehog for several reasons, depending on the wheel.
Food I'm struggling with myself but most "hedgehog" branded food could actually be considered really crappy cat food as when you look at the ingredient list they are almost the same. There are food threads on here listing high quality cat food, try have a mix of atleast two different foods as they are such picky eaters that if for some reason the formula changed/ you can't get it whatever you need something else he will eat. Since they are insectivores give insects (some are better than others and there are places that break that down), fruit and veggies are good to add as well.
Here is a list to start you off

You can make cages from the closet aid or Rubbermaid closet cubes as well (see housing section for ideas). I have two liners for each cage but I also use paper towels under every wheel and in one corner of every cage so that I can change those out regularly. Bucket wheels can also be made if you don't want to buy one. If you have an old rollerblade wheel or can get one from a garage sale, it costs about 10-15 dollars to make. Hedgie bags are great, we make ours out of corduroy layered with fleece (but the fleece is never exposed) because we have some very busy diggers and the fleece can pill and get caught in toes and mouths.
