After months of searching for a female companion for my 4 month old girl I've had no luck. I thought I'd found the perfect one but after going to visit today I saw that it was actually a boy. I did really fall for this boy, so I'm now looking into the possibility of getting him neutered as I don't have room for babies.
Could anybody share their experiences, opinions or tips on this? It's not something I've ever done with my chins before but this little guy had such a great personality I'm finding it really hard to turn him down. Obviously I'm aware that there's a fair risk with the procedure, and I know that even if I went through with it there's a chance they may not get on. I do have adequate cage space to cage them separately if need be.

As I say, any info would be much appreciated :)

The only time I neutered a male was in order to keep a bonded pair together. Based on my experience with bonding (never been successful), I would not neuter a male with the expectation that he will bond after. It is not worth the risk. Just my opinion.

My vet mentioned neutering to me after our first visit. He said that there aren't really any health risks involved with them not being neutered but they do go through puberty. I was told that if he isn't neutered, he might have a few little mood swings and try to "get it on" with things.

I've decided against it even though I've always gotten my cats/dogs fixed. A chinchilla is a small animal; I'm very concerned with putting him under any sort of anesthesia due to his size.
