My roommate and I are having to bring our pigeon Eros into the vet for surgery, she's going to have to be essentially spayed and I guess the ovaries on a bird are connected to the aorta! She has to be spayed because she is part king part splash so is smaller than a king but has king size eggs that she can't pass. We took her to the emergency vet, regular vet and now a specialist who I guess is the best (the vet said if anyone can do the procedue and her live it would be him). We didn't even know she was a she until she had a prolapsed egg- had acted very male but mated with males so assumed she was just a gay bird since that happens often enough.

Right now she's on antibiotics and pain meds I'm just hoping the surgury goes well!

I wish Eros the best of luck through the surgery. I have a female tiel that suffered prolapse in the fall, soon after I had gotten her from her former owner. We had to go through 2 weeks of antibiotics and she had to be stitched. I was so nervous when she returned to the vet to have her stitches removed because the vet couldn't guarantee that she would be healed and that she could immediately prolapse again. He kept her overnight and she made it through fine so we brought her home. It has now been months and I still get anxious when she starts acting up. She is on a healthier pellet now and I get her out for sun, since she has/had a calcium deficiency causing soft shelled eggs. She acts up quite often but I change things around in her cage, give her less up-time - things to discourage egg laying. So far it is working.

So I can really empathize for you and Eros and I sure hope the surgery goes well without any problems. Good luck, and please let us know that she is alright afterward!! :)

Thank you all so much for your kind wishes! She is ok and gaining weight back already. Amazingly there did not have to be a surgery, passed the egg this morning. The vet we went to (Dr. Speer) is just amazing- can't even describe, she was so calm around him and everything, he even let us see her in a spectrascope or something like that which was wild- said she may be able to lay it if he took the stitches out gave supportive care and some med that I guess can gently help with contractions. It worked and she layed this morning, I am so relieved! It's also good to know there are other options if it comes up later on like taking out the uterus instead which I guess can be less dangerous. He also said the "necroptic" tissue may very well have been badly bruised tissue.

Going back in a week to make sure all is still well and that she has put on enough weight etc. I'm just feeling so lucky there is someone so knowledgeable, skilled, and everything around here, it's no wonder we were recommended there.

That is good news! I'm so happy to hear Eros is ok and it really makes all the difference in the world to have a good, knowledgeable vet on hand.

With your first post, I looked at your location and wondered if you were going to Dr Speer. He is amazing with birds, as are his associates. It's a great clinic! Good luck with her :)

That is the exact person I saw he was so wonderful! Going back later this week so he can check up on her weight (she's put back on quite a bit so far!) to make sure nothing else was going on.

Do you mean 'necrotic' tissue?
Meaning, tissues or cells that the vet thought were dead may have been just badly bruised tissue.

I'm glad that Eros is doing well!

oops I can't spell especially when trying to type fast grr- yeah necrotic was what I meant!

Thanks, she's got a cage all to herself now and seeming pretty happy, also putting on some weight thankfully as well.
