i think this fits here... it's certainly not a "need a vet" type emergency, but i'd like quick advice!!!

i brought my new little boy home. he has some balance issues and walks pretty wobbly (i knew that when i got him). i have him in a ferret nation w Bass pans and pyrex litter pans. He's been trying to get used to walking on the metal pans but they are slippery. also he isnt "potty trained" yet so i'm guessing he peed right on the floor.

the problem is, he peed on the floor and might have tipped over and fallen in it. He's more than fine, but his fur is icky now! my question is, how do i clean his fur? I dont think a dust bath will work. i am including some pics so you can see. It's not TOO bad, it didnt seep all the way deep to his body, just the tips of his fur.

(much to my dismay, i'll be making fleece liner for his cage today to help him walk around and not fall in his pee! so hopefully this wont happen again)

Poor baby. You can use a damp wash cloth to wipe him down a little. If you have an old cotton tee-shirt, use that to dry him off. Then let him dust and it should get the worst off him.

forgive me for sounding like a novice, but i thought you werent ever supposed to get them wet? i've never done that because I thought thats how a fungus grows...?

They are not gremlins. ;-) They can get wet as long as you thoroughly dry them. Try to get him as dry as possible and then give a dust bath to get all the rest out. Comb him and dust him again. Mold can occur if you let him remain damp.

If he is that wobbly, you should really take him in to the vet to be examined. He could have a severe inner ear infection or who knows what else going on. He probably won't be able to roll in the dust by himself, you will probably have to rub the dust into his fur for him.

I have a dental chin who gets really messy because he drools and because he is a messy eater when I hand feed him. I have to wash him off often or his fur would turn to cement. It is OK to use a damp cloth as long as you can get him dry. Prolonged wetness can foster fungus but a brief wash and dry is fine. Just don't soak him to the skin and then walk away.

becky12883 - i think you missed the point of my post. I wasn't asking if i need to see a vet for his "wobbles", i was asking how to clean his fur. the professional breeder I received him from had every test and scan completed on him, with no conclusive findings to his condition. he just is the way he is and i love him regardless.

i really hope i don't have to type that every time I post something about him on the forum. I seem to remember when I belonged to the forum years ago, getting frustrated at all the unsolicited "advice". I realize there are many chinchilla owners more experienced than me here, BUT... it's frustrating to have the question I was actually asking ignored.

I was looking at my chinchilla earlier and I notice she has a kind of yellowish stain on her fur near her "poop spot" I mean I don't think there's anything wrong I just don't know how to clean her fur either because a dust bath won't work :(

I used a hair dryer to dry my chins after washing them from hand feeding. Make sure the blow dryer is on low. I would hold the dryer about 5 inches away from them and use my other hand to fluff the fur.
