Hello all,

I'm new around here, basically stumbled across the forum whilst looking for information about chin eye problems.

I have a 4 year old chin named Jake.

Three weeks ago, his eye started squinting, and then the fur around it vanished (I guess he was scratching) and around his eye looked a bit red.

It wasn't weeping, or watery - he'd get a very small amount of white stuff in the corner.

His eye lid swelled up a bit and he became a bit more squinty over a few days.

I looked online and saw some advice about cleaning it with contact lens solution, so I gave this a go.

Touching around his eye or his eye didn't seem to cause him any distress or pain, and he stayed quite still and calm for me to clean his eye.

It seemed to improve, less redness, less swelling and the fur began to grow back, so I was hoping it was getting better.

He was still very squinty, and then I realised his eye looked sunken into his head. This really concerned me and I thought I should take him to see the vet.

The vet examined him thoroughly and Jake was so good! I know he was scared, but he was still and didn't nip either of us! (He's never bitten me, but you never know when they're scared).

He had dye put in his eye and lights shone in it and the vet was baffled.

He's pretty sure there is no infection - no redness, swelling etc

He's pretty happy his teeth are not the issue too.

He was concerned that maybe he'd sustained an injury - smacked his head and had had a 'black eye' or something. However he said he would expect to be able to feel something, and for other features of his face to be wonky.

He also ruled out nerve damage due to no other features being affected.

He said there's a possibility of there being something going on inside his skull - like a tumor - which horrified me!!

He gave me some drops for his eye in the chance that there was an infection or something, but he seemed pretty sure they wouldn't make a difference.

Has anyone out there had or heard of a similar thing happening??

At no time has his behavior, eating, drinking or pooping changed - I restricted his sand baths as I read if they have eye infections this can make them worse. But otherwise, he still comes out, still plays, jumps around, makes happy chin noises etc.

I'm just worried about his eye :-(

Any help or advice much appreciated!

Miriam

Did the vet do a head/dental x-ray? Elongation of the tooth roots which is not visible (you can have elongation without malocclusion) can cause the listed issues. Also, were oral antibiotics prescribed?

No X-Ray was done, he seemed reluctant to do at this stage - yes the eye drops are antibiotics/ anti inflamitory.

Would there be any other symptoms if it was his teeth?

Depending on the extent of any dental issues there may or may not be other signs that there is a problem. Chronic eye problems can be a pretty good indicator.

Question: You said you used contact lens solution to rinse his eye. You mean saline solution right? Not actual disinfecting contact lens solution that you leave lenses in overnight?

I would follow through with the eye drops to see if they clear things up. What was prescribed and for how long? If the issue persists I would insist on a full set of head x-rays and I would also make sure that the vet your are seeing is well experienced in dealing specifically with chins, since many general 'exotic' vets are not and chins have some pretty specific needs that can not be lumped in with bunnies, guinea pigs, etc.

I would do the drops, if it did not clear, drops and a oral antibiotic, something sulfa based if the problem persists then a set of head x-rays-Myself, I would be in the vets face getting a x-ray now, but you can be conservative and wait for now.

Just to give you a couple of other options, I have two chins with chronic wet eye problems. Both have had x-rays (several) and neither has elongated roots. One has a blocked tear duct that can't be cleared and has had a wet right eye for 8 years. The other is sensitive to dust (every type I've tried). I found he has fewer problems if he dusts in an open pan rather than the typical enclosed dust houses. So there are other possible causes, however, it is important to eliminate root problems first and that requires a good x-ray.

A lot of very strange eye problems can happen courtesy of infection. Sometimes it doesn't look like an infection, but it is. I'd agree with giving a mild antibiotic and treating with eye drops to see if it helps. There doesn't need to be puss or inflammation for it to be an infection of the eye. Injuries can also cause some really strange symptoms...but normally not something that looks like a sunken eye.

I hope that this clears up. I've seen some really weird eye issues that end up being resolved with antibiotics and cleanliness.

Hello all,

Just to clarify - I use actual dust for chinchillas - it is labelled as dust and for chinchillas, and is very fine - just my wording of sand.

Also - yes saline that you would put in your eye.

Yes, my vet is very experienced with chinchillas - he (and his nurse) even owns a few :)

The drops are called 'Maxitrol' and I have to administer them twice a day for a week.

I guess if there are no improvements after this week I'll take him straight back and ask for x-rays.

If it is root elongation, is there anything that can be done?

In the USA we use that drop, its neo-poly-dex. I cant see the picture, it wont load since its too big I guess?

Sorry - here's the photo again (I'm new to the whole forum thing).

Since I've been using the drops for a few days, I've noticed he opens his eye right up for a while after they've gone in, then starts squinting again. His eye is still in the same position though.
