So I took my Boxer, Champ, and my Lab mix, Dallas to the dog park today. Everything was going great. One of my roommate's friends was there with her dogs and they were all playing great. Well this girl shows up with her two dogs, a small and a medium mutts. Well the medium dog comes up to my boxer and starts a fight. Champ didn't back down. But of course since Champ is a bulldog looking dog (since he is reversed brindle alot of people think he's a pit) its automatically his fault. I decided it would just be best to leave than to get into it with this girl. And Champ is the only one that got any "battle scars" he has a nice bite mark on his ear. So many people have given pits bad names. They are really great dogs. But in today's world anything that looks like it might have pit in it is labeled as bad. It really irritates me.

Just try renting a house with 4 pits and a black lab - have to tell them they're "Staffordshire Terriers" as most don't know the difference! They'd all lick you to death, unless you get them mad!

I hate this about the dog park. We've learned when not to go, who to avoid because of their dogs. One person tried to accuse my friend's dog of starting fights and getting aggressive, so we left, and then that dog (the person's dog) turned around and attacked another dog still in the park. Yup, it was really my friend's dog doing it from outside the park ;)

We FINALLY got a dog park here in my town. The first talk I remember hearing about putting one together came when Zoe was a puppy, and it finally opened the day before she turned 9. That's the City of Kingston for you!

We took both Zoe and Louis (French Bulldogs) there within the first week when it was just starting up. Usually people ask if they are bulldogs or bostons, but this one woman asked if they were pits! I mean come on! And this little chihuahua acted like a territorial fear biter and growled at dogs six times its size. I was so worried that he might try to start a fight with Louis that we had to pack up and leave, mostly because the owner already seemed to have it in her head that my dogs were dangerous because they looked like pit bulls to her.

That's why we don't go to the dog park. Kylie would've finished off that little dog in half a second!

OH yea I hate disrespectful dog owners!! I have a shih tzu, Hannah and a golden, Champ. I took my shih tzu to the park last fall and was playing with the kids. I had someone "accidentally" let loose of their huge lab mix, of course, it ran right up and tried to get to my shih tzu. He didn't bite her but rather swatted her with his paw, and got her all muddy and did mess up her salon hair do. The owner said oh my fault. I was pretty irritated because it could have been so much worse if I hadn't picked her up, but even then I could have got bit for getting in the middle of it. I know that accidents happen, but it sometimes appears that some people don't prevent accidents~!

:SarcasmA: But Catie. You have to remember we have that all important money making *cough cough* LVEC. Why would we want anything more? :OSarcasm:

I don't go to the dog park because there are too many stupid people. You have the people that don't realize how aggressive their dog is and let it start fights and then you have the people that don't realize dogs play rough and have a heart attack if another dog so much as looks cross eyed at their precious fifi.

Well since I only have one class on Mondays we are just gonna go during the week when no one else is there. I live in an apartment so the dogs really enjoy getting out and running. I just think its stupid that people just assume all bulldog types are bad. I know when I worked as a vet assistant I would rather deal with a pit bull then a chihuahua any day.

Ok, no offense... But, a) if you didn't want her salon do getting messed up you shouldn't have taken her and b) if you didn't want her playing with big dogs, why'd you take her?

Dogs get dirty at the dog park, and dogs are meant to be off their leash at the dog park. The way you described this situation, the dog didn't want to hurt her, just play with her.

Some of the little dog owners are annoying too. There was one lady who brought her teacup Chihuahua into the park, put it on the ground with a bunch of large dogs (huskies, rots, labs, etc), then screamed bloody murder when they all came over to see what this new..... "dog" was and acted like the dogs sniffing at her dog were killing it.

Some people's dogs....

We take Taz to various dog parks around here, and she's usually very well mannered. However, Taz is afraid of chihuahuas and I always try to make sure she's never put in a situation where we find out if she'll simply piddle or actually bite the dog if she's scared. I had her on the leash at the park because we were walking near (about 15 feet back) a group of the little ankle biters. One of the owners let their chihuahua off the leash and it ran right toward Taz. Taz's tail tucked and I asked the woman to call her dog back. She just smiled and ignored me. I asked again, saying that my dog was scared of the little dog and I didn't want something to happen... and she simply said, "you dog is a big baby".

She completely flipped when Taz snarled at the little dog, screaming that my dog was vicious and shouldn't be allowed in the park. I'm sorry, but I asked you twice to call your dog back because I didn't want to scare Taz like that. She's always been afraid of little dogs, but is usually fine if they don't run at her, barking like mad.

We ended up having to leave the park because the woman was making such a scene about my "vicious" dog, who stopped growling as soon as the little dog exited her personal space.

I think it's really sad. My sister and I take her dog to one of the dog beaches and it really wrecks it for everyone...if your dog isn't dog friendly etc. then be responsible and take care of it...at least keep them on the leash:yuck:

It really is, but then you also get the people who realize that dogs play differently than people. We took Taz to another park the week after and she spotted a beagle just up ahead. The beagle spotted her and they both started running at each other. Taz misjudged the beagle's size and ended up running right over it. The beagle tumbled, Taz hit the ground and they both whirled around to stare at each other. Then, they started chasing each other around and playing. The beagle's owner was laughing hysterically, which really shocked me because I was sure she'd flip out. I mean, Taz is double the size of the beagle. LOL.

Oh Champ is always doing that. Some owners laugh. Some freak out. He also loves to "box" like all boxers and gets really excited when a dog with box him back

My dog is afraid of other dogs, so no dog parks for him:cry4:. My Mom had a little dog that thought she was a Rotweiller she would tear into any dog that had the audacity to come near her, so we were mindful and kept her away and on a restraining leash when she had to be near other dogs,. It is all about responsibility and respect of others .
My dog has either the first Vet visit or a special time reserved for him to see the Vets so he doesnt encounter any other Dog, He gets so scared he will bite out of fear. He isnt mean just scared, I know this and I know my Dog so I protect myself and others, thats why Dog parks are frightening to me Most owners say" I didnt know my dog would do that!" I am all for socializing a dog , but it should be observed and in a controlled setting , most Dog Parks cant give that, or at least the ones I have seen.

I have a (sort of) interesting story about dog parks.

My parent's dog, a mini-poodle, goes to the park quite often. He is playful and sort of pushy. He will take on dogs much larger than him. But, he won't bite or do any harm. You can tell if he is doing out of harmful aggression or just being playful. The second he gets a little out of hand, we step in. We know that the pit wrestling with him is not the instigator! He, for lack of a better term is a you-know-what disturber! He will run right into other dogs and get them to chase him and wrestle with dogs 4x his size.

But that's different than dogs who do cause problems because they want to be the alpha dog or want to bully other dogs. It's just puppy behaviour. If there is a dog who doesn't appreciate Razen's behaviour, he usually goes and finds someone who will play along. (I didn't give him the name... blame the parents!).

I would have to be totally oblivious to think that Razen is such an angel and would never start anything. It's all about who is there at the time though. If there are older dogs there who just want to do some romping around, then it is our job to keep Razen occupied and try and get him to leave the other dogs alone. This doesn't always work and sometimes we just have to take him for a long walk by himself.

I would be more inclined to believe that a little yappy aggressive dog would start something rather than a pit or a rottie.
