He's a 1 year old standard poodle, neutered just last week.

Anyway for some reason no matter what we do this dog pees in the house. He's housebroke, he knows to go outside but if we come home he gets excited and pees, if he's doing something he shouldn't and we say no and try to redirect he pees. We ignore him when we first get home until he calms down, and we used to ask him to sit but he still pees sitting down.

Just today he was chewing on something he shouldn't and my husband told him to sit and went to retrieve the item from his mouth very gently (because he took off with the thing he was chewing on) and my husband was just calm as could be and the dog peed all over him as soon as he touched him. He has toys and bones and everything all over and we try to redirect him from something innapropriate to something appropriate.

I just don't know what to do he never chewed on anything before it's just recently he started but the peeing thing has been going on since we got him at 8 weeks.

The peeing thing would most likely be submissive peeing seeing as he's done it since he was a puppy. Lila had issues with this as a puppy but she's slowly growing out of it.

When you come home don't make a big deal, don't greet him, pet him or make him sit seeing as even doing that makes him pee. Just ignore him and when he's finally settled down, you can give him some pets but don't make a big deal out of it.

I'm not sure about the peeing when he's chewing on something since I haven't had this issue. For Lila it was about greeting people. She'd pee whenever someone would come and say hi to her. So I tell everyone to just ignore her, let her sniff you, don't reach down and look at her and try to pet her.

Well we thought he was growing out of it, until his neuter. Now I could be home for hours, reach down to rub his ear if he's laying or sitting and he'll get up and there's a little puddle on the carpet.

The peeing while he's being told no or like what he did to my husband is new though. I don't know what it's all about. He acts like he's scared but we don't yell just say no sternly and give him something appropriate.

It's likely him being submissive and excited. I'm not sure how to help it.... the only thing I can think of is putting a doggy diaper on him...

Mt moms mini poodle jsut got neutered and for that first week we all thought we were going to go MAD. He was peeing EVERWHERE! Which is has NEVER done before. Afterthe two weeks he calmed down A LOT.

May I ask what the vet gave for a pain reliever or sedative for that first week? The one my moms dog got is actually known to cause behavioral issues in dogs. Ace somethin.. I can look it up if we still have it. One that and the valium were out of his system he calmed down.. Believe it or not they never calmed him.

Its called submissive urination. It can be frustrating, but your dog is simply trying to tell you that you are master, and he is "below you in rank". My girl use to do this, and the real trigger was baby talk or excited talk when I come home. Completely, 100% ignore him when you get home, or perhaps greet him outside (patio/backyard/etc.). Along with it being submissive urination, he may also have confidence issues which is why he does it when someone bends over him. Obediance classes will do a lot of good for building self esteem and socialization skills.

Oh, and please, whatever you do, never reprimend him for peeing. No yelling, smacking, don't say "bad dog", etc. Also do not comfort him, or baby him when he does it. That'll only tell him that that behavior is acceptable, and that he should pee when he is greeted or spoken to.

Hm, well the peeing whenever you pet him now after his neuter does not sound right at all. That doesn't sound like submissive peeing any more. I wonder though if as the pain from the surgery goes away if he'll stop that.

Most vets don't give pain killers for neuters, but some do and some do for spays as well. My vet didn't give any, but offered some at a not-so-reasonable price. I spoke with another vet who told me to give baby aspirin (10 mg/pound of dog weight). I had the vet cut the pills for me, and told me what dosage to give and how often. Before giving any pills to your animals, ask your vet first. No advil, tylenol, excedrin for sure though!

It is possible for them to act differently after a spay/neuter, and time will tell over the next few days or week. If the pee'ing continues, it may be submissive urination. My girl pee'd ON me 2 days after her spay, and never did it again. So its possible for them to act slightly different after the surgery.

Oh, and what really helped my girl get over her submissive urination was when I added my boy to the family. That has been known to happen....

I forgot what they gave him I never gave it to him he didn't seem to need it and certainly didn't want to take it.

Hopefully this will calm down because my husband is getting very mad. It's not the dog's fault though he knows that he just doesn't like being peed on.

We don't yell or do anything when he pees on the floor we just take him out and clean it up. We did take him to obedience, puppy school and 2 sets of obedience classes. The problem is he's smart but doesn't want to do what we try to teach him, no matter how fun we make it. He still thinks he can do whatever whenever he wants no matter how much we keep on him.

I just realize that your dog is a poodle and the dog Melissa is talking about is a poodle as well. The only dog that I have known to do this is a poodle as well. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but may it is quite common in poodles?
