My Dad turned 80 on April 10th and yesterday (the 18th) we had a surprise birthday party for him. There were 20 people there, my cousins, their families, my Dad's 3 kids, some neighbors and my Dad's caretaker. My sister even flew in from Arizona for the party. It was WONDERFUL. My Dad was very surprised and flattered and even wiped a tear or two from his eyes. Gloria (his caretaker) got him out of the house at 1130 and didn't bring him back until 130 pm. We went in there and decorated and set up snacks, hors douvres, the cake and the main food. When he walked in we all sang "Happy Birthday". He was so surprised. It was also cute because he had a blue tongue because he just got done eating a blue sucker. LOL There was plenty of beverages and my cousin was whipping up different flavored cosmopolitans (raspberry, blueberry and lemon). It was such a great time with family being all together and enjoying each other. The weather was perfect and the two littlest ones in the family romped in the patch of trees next to my Dad's house. We all were able to sit outside and enjoy the day. One of my cousins has been doing extensive family geneaology on our Mother's side and it was soooo interesting. My cousin made us folders with all the info she has so far and it was so interesting. We are only three generations into America with our family originating in Corleone, Sicily. Anyway, it was such a wonderful time, full of family love and caring and sharing. I took pictures but my Dad will probably be 85 by the time I get them posted, but I will work on that, with the help of my son. May my Father have another 20 years!!

Sounds wonderful! We recently did a similiar event for my grandfather's 80th. All of us grand kids and our parents and some of his old friends got up and made speeches about what he meant to us. I choked up when I started telling him how I everything I do, I do in hopes of making him proud.. he got all choked up and gave me a huge hug.

It's awesome to be able to celebrate someone's life!
