My chins came to me from the breeder with giardia. They saw the vet the day i brought them home from the breeder. This was august 22nd. My chins were on a ten day treatment of antibotics. The vet tech said to bring a stool sample a month after the first visit to recheck their stool. Is this the normal length of time to do a recheck? I read the sticky but saw nothing about recheck time. I'm sorry if it was there and I missed it. Their poops have been normal since I brought them home. Is giardia harder on young chins? One of my boys is almost six months the other is 11 weeks. I'm worried about them, I have read giardia can be deadly without treatment. Could my chins give giardia to my rats? I wash my hands in-between handling each animal. They have no access to each other, but are housed in the same room. Is a second treatment often required? Thanks in advance!

Rats can get Giardia, yes.

If proper sanitation procedures arent followed, the rats can pick it up or the chins can get re infected. If there is any transmission of waste between cages, that would probably be cause to have all animals (if you have any others in the same room) tested for the giardia.

I have been vacuuming everyday. No feces has been transmitted between cages. Thank you for the information I will be extra careful now. I don't want anymore of my animals to get sick.

If they are asymptomatic, I would not be worried. Some animals are just carriers, and there is no reason to give them loads of antibiotics. The only thing fatal about giardia is the diarrhea and subsequent dehydration related to that. If your chins have normal feces, they will no doubt be fine.
Rechecking in a month is fine, you could do it sooner, but again, if they're asymptomatic I wouldn't worry about it.
Also, no matter if they are ill or not, you should practice proper hygiene between your animals.

Too late to edit.
If you want to be aggressive about getting rid of the giardia, when you do a recheck, you should do three fecal samples in a week period. The cysts are shed intermittently, so just because you get one negative fecal back doesn't necessarily mean they are free of it.
