They just lay on their wood shelves and look miserable all the time.
They have 2 shelves, a wooden house, and 2 cuddle buddies.
Their hammock was mutilated last night..

I take them out for about an hour every night or every other night..
I don't really know what else to do.
What would you recommend?

do they have a flying saucer or chin spin? plenty of toys to chew on? Puddles does most of her "playing" at night when I'm sleeping so maybe you're just not seeing all the action. She's mostly lounging during the day as well. :)

Ditto on what Puddles&Chubbs said. My chins hardly make any noise during the day and sleeep in their tube or hidey house. One night I had a project from work that I needed to finish and was up all night, I could have sworn they were throwing a party in their cage!

Mine always get excited when I put a brand new hanging toy in their cage, they love eating all the bark off and then leaving it alone after the bark is gone lol.
What I do with my toys with bark on them is if they aren't seeming to chew on them any longer I take them out. Then I put a new toy in, but I keep the old one without the bark and I swap them out, so it's like it's new to them but it isn't really, and they do seem to chew on them more when I put them back in even though there's no more bark on them.

Otherwise if they have a wheel and some fleece things I think they're probably just fine, mine always look depressed when they're sleeping during the day, but then at night they're active.

How big is your cage? A chin enjoys having a good size cage to live in. About the only other thing I would suggest besides a wheel and toys like others have mentioned, is possibly placing a few more jump shelves in there for them. Chins enjoy jumping around on as many things as they can......:)

Is there room in the cage for a timothy hay tunnel? My chins "love" them. Also,
i'm thinking if they aren't interested in the cuddle buddies, take them out-they
have each other. Only give the toys, you can tell that they like and are chewing up.
They do need a few more shelves/ledges to jump from. They'll be ok that got a good
chin mom who cares!

Toys are a great addition to a cage and help keep their teeth healthy. I like to make my fur crew new toys. They also have a ton of ledges in their cages. I use the lava ledges and landings, fleece tubes and hammocks. That way they have a variety of items to explore on.

For me, the chin spin is the best investment I've made. My chin uses it several times a day. I also have different things for her to chew on, from cardboard, to lava bites, and apple sticks. I'll hear her grinding away on an apple stick throughout the day. She also has access to her playpen at all times which is filled with cardboard boxes that she is constantly rearranging.

Even if you don't get a saucer, I highly recommend a wheel. My chins love their wheel, and sometimes don't want to share :) And it's great for exercise.
And at the pet stores, they have different types and sizes and shelving you can add for the cage. I think, to some extent, the more things you have in your cage, the more there is for them to do - like tubes, houses, etc.
