just got a ferret nation 142 on wednesday and whenever my ball of fluff gets the chance he starts ripping into the cage walls, he has shaved quite a bit of the finish off in some location i was wondering if there is anything i can put on the bars to deter the chewing? and if i can't what should i cover them with?im afraid the paint may hurt him or that the cage will eventually rust from not being covered, I also may know why he does it. I'd assume he is bored but right now his wheel is on order. any ideas are greatly appreciated

Wish I could help, but 2 of my 3 also chew relentlessly on the FN bars and doors. They have wheels, wood shelves, hay, and wood toys to chew on, and they still chew the cage. On the other hand, they have never gotten sick from it, and so far the cage hasn't rusted where they chew, but if you look closely, you can definitely see quite a bit of damage.

My chins will bite the bars... not much you can do about that. I've had 2 of them actually start to scrape finish off. To deter that behavior I hung toys in those places. It's worked well so far.

okay thanks im gonna try the toy thing, i think he does it to get attention cause we always wake up middle of the night and take him out because of it...

that's exactly why he's biting the bars, he knows that it will make you take him out of his cage, which is what he wants.

start ignoring him when he bites the bars, and he should realize that it doesn't work to get his humans to do what he wants. if his cage is in your bedroom, try putting him elsewhere in the house, as long as the different location will still ensure he gets attention (when he is not biting the bars).

This is my my magic tactic. It works as long as your chin isn't a fleece eater. Buy a piece of fleece and cute it into a bunch of 1" wide strips. Tie them in knots around each individal bar ...you'll need to make a bunch of them to cover a lot of space on the bars. Use the fleece about 6 inches from bottom of the cage upward, or whatever height area your chir bar bites. Basically when they bite, they have to run into a bunch of fleece knots . They'll get frustrated and stop. If they move to another area, cover that one too!...it worked for my most severe cage biter.
