Have you ever had a dream that you thought would never come true and then one day it became a reality?
That is how I feel about my beautiful Lipizzan mare Bresciana. I had wanted this sweet girl for several years but had given up on the dream of ever owning her, then last September she fell into my lap. The love I have for this mare is unbelievable!
A little history about the breed. Lipizzaners or as they are known here, Lipizzans are the oldest breed in Europe, dating back more than 400 years. They were not just bred to do dressage, or "horse ballet" but were originally bred to be war horses, and have become one of the most versatile horse breeds there is.
Bresciana was bred on the east coast where she was purchased by a friend of mine named Polly. Not long after getting her Polly decided to bring her to Washington State to live for a time on a Lipizzan breeding farm. She stayed there for a few years until the woman who had her had to downsize her herd due to age issues. Polly would have liked me to have taken her then but I wasn't experienced enough for an untrained horse. I helped Polly to find a new home for Bresciana in Idaho, where she lived for two years until the woman there's marriage started falling apart. That is when she finally came to live with me.

The first half year was not pleasant with me nearly giving up on Bresciana a number of times because I was afraid of her because she nearly ran me over a number of times. The poor girl had been through so much that she didn't know who to trust. She would freak if she was taken away from her herd.
I found a trainer to work with her for a month and then had to stop as she was moving. This was just enough to help her to start to settle. A few weeks after the trainer moved I had to get in Bresciana's face to tell her to knock it off, since that day she has been sweet and calm.
A few weeks ago I put her halter on her and tucked the leadrope into her halter so that she would be easy to catch once the vet was ready for her. While she was wandering around she accidentally stepped on the lead rope and got stuck. She patiently stood there for quite a while, not in the least bit upset or falling apart like so many horses would have. She waited patiently until I was able to get the leadrope ouf from under my hoof. So prould of my girl

You can see the lead rope stuck under her hoof and Bresciana waiting patiently for someone to rescue her.

She is such a beautiful horse and I'm so happy for you that you finally got your dream horse and that she is settling down at long last.

Thankyou Jenn, she really is a dream come true. She gets better every day. We are hoping to have her ready to be ridden in a clinic with the Andreas Hausberger, chief rider of the Spanish Riding School next summer.
