So I'm graduating in May and have to move all my stuff I've accumulated over the 4 years I've been in MI down to VA where I'll be attending vet school in the fall.
I've never done a full blown move (Although in actuality it's maybe 2 rooms worth of stuff) - so I'm looking for any tips and discounts if you happen to know someone who knows someone

The most difficult thing is the transportation - holy cow rental trucks are expensive!
Mom told me to call PODS since it looks like the ideal thing - I about had a heart attack when they quoted me over TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS just to move my stuff down there and another $125/mo to store it! :banghead: Is it legal to rip people off like that!? Where does the cost ever balance out with the convenience?

So now it looks like we're back to looking for rental trucks - mom really wanted a van since we could probably stuff everything in a van and my car, but vans are only for local moves (bunch a bull). So we gotta find a truck.

So, any tips or shortcuts you guys have learned the hard way?

eta: no chins or anything involved in the move - just two dogs, thankfully!

For two thousand give me the time and date and the van will be at your door. Enclosed trailer available at extra cost.

i believe Enterprise rents one-way vans at a reasonable rate, and discounts more than one! Have fun!

I got a 26 foot penske from boston, ma to rochester, ny for < $700 with blankets to wrap furniture. Used AAA discount on it.

I was also thinking check out the car rental places if you think a van would work and ask for a one way trip. Also, start looking around, what can you sell/leave behind to pair down the size to another car or regular van if needed.

A dodge grand caravan has the seats that fold all the way into the floor. If you can squeeze everything you own into that along with a car then you just need to find a rental company that does one way trips and rents the grand caravan with fold away seats.

I have picked up awesome furniture deals in the last week on craigslist from people moving across country and they have found it cheaper to just sell everything and rebuy when they get there.
