I'm considering getting our kittens spayed at a mobile clinic.

Are mobile clinics as good as a regular vet?

Also, is it best to get them spayed at 6 months old?
Mine are a little on the small side, but the vet was never worried. At 4 1/2 mo. they were exactly 2 lbs. Now at almost 6 months they're probably 3 lbs.

From my understanding, mobile clinics are just as good as a normal vet.

Also, most vets will spay/neuter a kitten around 2-3 months old, the earlier the better. My cat was only 5lbs when she was spayed, at 1.5-2 years. My other cat was neutered by the humane society when they got him at about 3 months.

I had all 3 of my chihuahuas neutered at a mobile clinic. Everything went great and only cost $60 per dog, whereas the vet wanted to charge $200 a piece with other fees attached. 3 years later, no complications.

My kitten was from a rescue, and was fixed at 8 weeks. They hoped to find her a home quickly due to her eye problem. I think they can do it whenever. Good luck.

Only 3lbs at 6 months? That is REALLY tiny. The rescue I foster with does spay/neuter at 2.25lbs, which for most kittens is 10 weeks.

When kittens are at a normal weight, I recommend spay/neuter long before 6 months. It reduces spraying in males to almost zero.

Six months old is a perfect time to get them spayed. Old enough where you don't have to worry so much about complications, but still young enough where they haven't hit puberty yet.

Spaying and Neutering has become a quick and simple surgery. It's very important to have it done. Hence the reason mobile spay/neuter clinics have come into being. The surgury is done by a licensed veterinarian in a sterile environment. It very safe.

Not true! Most cats have their first heat cycle between 5 and 10 months.

Some shelters do it as early as 8 weeks. I think that's way to early. There could be complications from the anesthesia, etc. They are little puppies and kittens. Who knows what could happen. I understand the idea behind it. They want the animals sterilized before they are adopted out, which does make sense. There are risks involved though.

My husband and I used to work at a mobile spay neuter clinic. We did spays and neuters on kittens over two pounds. They are very safe, a lot of times there is more attention to safety and sterility in mobile clinics than in regular clinics. The earlier the surgery the less likely that health and behavior problems like spraying, mammary cancer, testicular or prostate cancer, abscesses from males fighting, etc.

Yeah they look like healthy 6 month kittens only shrunk down to the size of 3 months.
At 3 months old they could lay down comfortably on my boyfriends shoulder. :cute:
