My chinchilla, Cosmo, lost her cage mate recently. We adopted another chin and are keeping it in a cage right next to Cosmo. They do not get along at all, and I think it could be stressing Cosmo out. I noticed yesterday that Cosmo had some fur missing around one of her eyes, but no wetness or discharge. I separated the chinchillas in different rooms, but I think it may have gotten a little worse, not certain though. Cosmo is not acting strange or hurt. I was wondering if this is most likely from stress or if it is probably caused by an infection or something more serious.

When you bring in a new chin, you should observe a 30 day quarantine period away from your resident chin to protect against incoming infection that may occur. I have not had personal experience with a chin losing fur around it's eye due to stress. I've seen it from tooth issues or infection, but not stress.

Cosmo probably has an eye infection. When the eye weeps they scratch and this causes the fur to come out. It's pretty easy to treat the earlier you catch it. Try and get her to a vet.
