From what ive seen, most ppl use some kind of coffee can or what not with both ends cut off and filed down for there tubes; then cover it in fleece. Are the tubes safe without the fleece? Im not sure what those items are made from. But my girls are chewing up there fleece tube cover a good bit lately. (and just when i was getting rdy to make them fleece liners to >< )

I bought steel base tunnels from Fuzzies Kingdom a few years ago to combat the same problem. Once I removed the PVC, they lost interest in chewing through the fleece, so I left the tube covers on. The edges aren't sharp, so I'd definitely be comfortable leaving them off if I had to.

I use Cardboard tubes. 2 of mine have figured out there is yummy chewable cardboard beneath and have made it their life mission to destroy it, otherwise they leave it alone.

I know some people also use PVC. I have a half tube made with PVC and my girls don't touch it. (Same girls who's life mission is to destroy the cardboard tube inside their fleece tube)

Same here. We have no fleece chewing when we use PVC tubes but ZZ will destroy fleece if there is cardboard underneath. Silly chinchillas.

If you are using a coffee can, just make sure it is sturdy enough to hold your chinchillas and that there are no sharp edges exposed. As with anything, you'll also have to keep an eye on it for chewing.

Both my boys cage and my girls cage have had a metal tube in there for many years, covered with fleece. But my girls have chewed up everything fleece, and have recently started with the tube liner. So they are going to probably have to go. I was just wondering if i could leave the metal tube in itself in there if it didn't have any sharp edges.

My girls are chewers so ill never try pvc. And they not only tear up cardboard, they like to eat it, so thats a no.

They will literally tear the paint off the walls and eat it if they can.
