I've recently put gizmos food dish on the floor on top of white fleece...I guess I've never noticed how messy of an eater chins are!!! I've been noticing a lot of crumbled up crumbs all over the place where he eats. I've heard of "powereing pellets" bc of teeth problems. ... but he'll grab a pellet, sit back and munch on it..and the crumbs are right where he is sitting. Does everyone think its just because of that? His teeth seem fine..hes eating tons of hay and chewing lots of wood. Am I being paranoid again?

As long as he is eating normally, not showing any other symptoms of tooth problems, and not losing weight, he is fine.

Gizmo - Seriously. You need to chill out a bit with your chinchilla. I know you are concerned about his health, but you are way past paranoid. I picture this poor chin being hovered over 24/7, never getting any rest or fun, because you're constantly looking for something to go/be wrong, then being rushed to the vet for absolutely no reason.

Take a deep breath, sit back, and relax. Enjoy your chin instead of constantly seeing things that aren't there. I don't know how he can be any fun at all if you are so worried about him that you can't just simply be with him.

Watch for the normal signs with your chin, so you don't have to panic all the time. Is he holding his weight? Is he eating, drinking, peeing, pooping? Does he have normal energy levels? If all of those things are normal, even with a little fluctuating, then he's fine.

Ok, this is normal to have crumbs. It's like a dog eating a bone. When they chew, some is bound to fall out. My boys do that... Also, my boys will eat only part of their food then throw the rest of the piece down. So, I tend to find tons of little ends of their food. It's not out of the norm.

HAHA! I have 2 boys that also bite off half a pellet and drop the other half back in the bowl. Chins are VERY messy kids! They get crumbs everywhere, we are constantly sweeping shelves of food crumbs.

Herby does this too..She will take a bite of food, throw that down, and pick up another one and eat half of that one, then throw it down, etc..

Sometimes I think chinchillas are messier than my kids were as babies..8)

i enjoy my time with him quite a bit.. and I do have reasons to be paranoid, the year i've had him has been extrememly stressful due to health reasons, so of course I have my gaurd up when something looks suspicious to me.

AHAHAHA I thought Lily was the only chin who only ate 1/2 a pellet before throwing the rest on the ground... Chins sure little stinker butts sometimes. She'll eat her orchard grass just fine, but when it's time for timothy hay she'll pull it all out of the container (i've tried several now) and spread it around the floor before eating her favorite pieces. I don't think these chinnies appreciate the cost that goes into their food lol.
