I wanted to share with all of you a few photos of our new guest Gretchen. She was pulled from a shelter after they put off euthanizing her like they normally would for an injured animal that's dropped off. Her story is that she was a stray that was hit by a car. A rescue group pulled her from the shelter and a vet tried to pin her leg with no success. They ended up amputating. One of the rescue workers is going out of town this weekend to do a transport, so we agreed to let her stay for a few days. She's doing well, although a little depressed.

She's safe for now and on the mend but will be needing a good home in a few weeks. They're talking about transporting her up to the east coast perhaps.

Also, wanted to mention that Guardian Angels for Soldier's Pets is still in great need of foster families. I spoke with them last night and one of the states that they have almost no foster homes in is Ohio. If anyone wants to be on the list, please visit their website.

wow - there is actually rescue groups in TN that take in adult animals. My son and daugher-in-law live in Erin and found the animal shelters around there refuse adults animals. People keep dropping off animals where she lives and she has taken in quite a few and found some homes for others. A lot are found dead on the road. She tried taking them to shelters but as I said no shelter who take in adults aound where she lives

There is/was a animal shelter in Knoxville off of kingston pike that takes in adult dogs. They are a high kill shelter though. When I was little, we adopted my akita from there when she was just a puppy. She was on the e-list for that day, and we took her. She lived to be 17 years old. Such a great dog.

I hope Miss Gretchen finds her forever home.... You know... you could always adopt her ;)

We are fortunate here for we have serveral adult dog/cat shelters here. Most kill but have a few that are none kill. They stay as long as they get adopted, or have to be put to sleep because of health issues or old age.

I don't understand that a rescue (shelter) does not take them in, makes me shiver a bit. Are they not there to rescue?

I wish I could take her in...(

The shelters where my son's family lives only take in puppies and kittens. They can usually find home for them but not the adults so they don't take in adult animals

That is so sad, Barb.

I need someone to talk some sense into my husband. He has put his foot down about adopting more dogs. Five is enough in what universe? We have 21 acres, there's enough space for more. But no, I just have five little spoiled brat dogs that my husband calls his "babies" or "children" and lets them lick him in the mouth. Someday I want more, and I want larger dogs that are a little more sturdy. :)

Hey Susan... I know a place you can stay 3 hours from Nashville so you can adopt little Gretchen :) ;)

It's very tempting!! She's the best dog... likes to lay on her blankie and goes potty outside. She doesn't bark, likes kids, and is good with other animals. The only problem with adding to our number here keeps us from being able to foster. It's going to be HARD to give her up. I do think she's older than the 4-5 years they told me. I'd say 6-7 maybe.

As for the dog adoptions at shelters and taking adults, that I don't know much about. I've mostly done chin rescue and the dog fostering we did was for rescues in other states. I know everyone around here is pretty much FULL (thanks to the herds of dogs that get dumped near houses and have to get picked up by the county). I do know she was supposed to be euthanized on arrival but she was so sweet that someone at the desk couln't push through the paperwork to get it done. Her leg was crushed but her papers said "slight limp" to help her cause.

My fuzzy face girl, Gracie, is from Tenn. My understanding is that a lot of southern shelters are OVERWHELMED and very adoptable animals are killed daily. Volunteers from GA tell me that a lot of people don't believe in spaying and neutering and/or are too poor. In my area you would have a hard time finding a puppy in our shelters. Most of the puppy's you find on petfinder in our local rescues come up from down south.

I adopted Gracie as a one year old. At the time I couldn't find anything but pitbulls (homeowner's ins. say no pits) and large, animal aggressive dogs. I do always try to adopt local if I can.

It's a shame that more people don't stand up and say enough with the killing...lets find low cost ways to spay and neuter!

Lots of love and luck to Gretchen.
