My boyfriend and I are planning to go to Hawaii in August. We went last year and stayed on The Big Island and on Oahu. This year we are planning to return to The Big Island and going to Maui. We are going to stay at the same hotel on The Big Island but I would love some advice on nice areas and hotels in Maui  We prefer a quiet area, we really aren't into going out to bars and dancing so the hotel doesn't need to be near a city area (Waikiki was not really our cup of tea) we would just like a nice area with some grocery shopping nearby.

Also if you have advice on activities, please let me know! I know there is a zip line but the boyfriend doesn't really like heights so we will have to see about that one. Last year he wouldn't go in the shark cage with me, something about being afraid of sharks, whimp!

I went to Maui a couple years ago and LOVED it. We didn't stay in a hotel as we knew someone living there and stayed in their condo. We stayed in Kihei and it was a wonderful area. It wasn't crowded and there were a lot of beaches to choose from. We mainly went to Charley Young beach and it was awesome...not overly crowded, very clean, and beautiful.

Several things we did... we went horseback riding up in Wailea. It was beautiful. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the horseback place, but iw as awesome. We rode up into the mountains, through the forests, down to the beach. It was a beautiful ride and I highly recommend it. It lasted a good while and wasn't terribly expensive.

We also took a whale watch/snorkeling trip out to Molokini Crater. It is very calm and beautiful out in the middle of the ocean. The formation of the crater makes for very clear waters and amazing snorkeling opportunities. There is a reef near it and there are tons of fish. We went in March which was the peak migration for the Humpback whales, so we also got very close to them.

If you have a car, go for a ride on the Hana Highway. It's about 52 miles that takes you through the forests..however it's full of turns and such so it really takes about 2 hours to get through it all. It's totally worth it. It takes you past waterfalls, ocean views, and bamboo forests just to mention a few things. There are also several businesses set up along the way for shopping.

Also in Kihei, there are a lot of stands and shops for you to shop. Lulu's is an awesome restaurant and has some amazing surf and turf. It's casual and completely open air, kind of like a bar settling but with more class..lol. It also has an ocean view. Stella Blue offers some amazing fine dining.

Boss Frog's is a good place to go to set up all your activities and they are really helpful with the area. We set up all of our activities through them.

If you have any questions let me know! We would love to go back some day and are shooting for hopefully next year.

wow thanks Stack that is a lot of great info! I think I am going to have to print out your post and take it with us :)

Too bad I don't think we will get to see any whales, it won't be the time of year for them to be there :( we missed out on them last year too. We both work in retail and I am in school almost all year, it really limits the times we can go

No prob! Next time I would love to do a helicopter tour. It takes you past the rock they filmed for the Jurassic Park movie introduction...too cool... :D

It does stink that you won't get to see the whales. :( They are so curious and you can get very close to them. We were watching them breach off of the beach even. Maybe some day!

cool! I am going to have to check that out! Last year we did a helicopter tour over Volcano National Park, it was great. We got to see an open skylight and lava flowing into the ocean
