I have another question.

Tonight, i was giving the chinchillas a dust bath & snuggles & I noticed that Cinnamon has some matts right above her tail..there are afew of them, and pretty good sized..

What can I do to get them out?

Just pull them out. I just pulled out some matts on one of my chins about ten minutes ago. Just pull the fur out...once is becomes a matted clump there's no chance of combing it out.

I've had chins for about five years now and I keep reading about matts and such but I've never had a chin with a matt. I guess that's good and I should be glad and I am, but was wondering if certain chins (mutations etc.) are more prone to matts? I have often pulled out little tufts but where/how do these chins get matts? Curious minds want to know.

I don't know about certain mutations, but in a male/female cage you can sometimes find them on the back, down near the tail and around the hip area.

Ok....it won't hurt to pull it out? She is still getting used to me, so this could be interesting!

She was housed with a male before we got her.. so that's probably it!

I am glad I found this thread, as I think Trixie has a couple matted areas on her back. I tried combing them out, but she will only tolerate the comb for a few seconds. So, I am trying to work them out with my fingers.
How do they get them? Is there something I should be doing different in her care.
I am posting a picture where you can kind of see the area I mean. The matts are a bit smaller than when I took this picture.
An interesting thing..she got a smaller matted area last year, but it worked it self out.

Has she gotten that way after you pulled the matts out with the comb or was it like that to begin with?

Can you get a picture of her full behind.

I agree...there's an obvious chew spot and the other large area looks like a possible slip or more chewing. If you can get a better picture we'll be able to help more. ;)

Thanks, I will see what I can do about getting a better picture within the next day or two. I will either post them here or start a separate thread.
