I was looking into buying shelf guards for my boys, Terrance and Phillip , and my girls. The pricing on quality cages is more than I can justify spending for six sets of shelf guards. I have them for the bottom of the cage and they keep falling off. My dad was wondering if aluminum would be okay? He bought a piece that looks like this:

The edges are rounded though, so they are not sharp. He would be making basically a shelf for the shelf to sit on, giving the shelves sides so the boys can't kick poo off of their shelves. I have read varying things on the Internet about Aluminum. I don't want my dad trying to make shelf guards out of something toxic to my chins.

If I used that, I would just cut it to length, file the edge off and glue it to back edge of the shelf. Then, when you needed to replace the shelf, you could just pry it up and glue it to another one and you could just wipe it clean.
