Hi I'm Lynn. I am a first time chin owner; I purchased a one and a half year old grey male from a pet store. I am told he was hand raised.

Since getting him I have done ALOT of research on how to care for him, keep him healthy, hoppy and comfortable and shopped online and pet stores every other day for supplies for him.I spoil him and he seems to follow regular patterns of playing at night, sleeping during the day.

He is very loved and adored by me and especially my boyfriend who adores "the little guy." He named him Cecil. I sing to him, clean after him every day. He has a wicker house, a wicker mat, apple chew sticks alfalfa hay blocks, hay and honey bars to chew and he likes all his chew toys. He also has a dustbath and a crinkly tunnel to play in.

We really enjoy him and always spend time with him outside the cage all the time. He has comfy hiding places he enjoys that are safe for him and clean.

I hope to share my experiences here and learn more. I found this forum searching on the internet.

Hi Lynn - welcome to CnH. :)

It would be a good idea to get rid of the honey bars. It's a good rule of thumb to remember that anything that comes from a pet store is most likely not safe for a chin, i.e., honey bars, snack treats, yogurt drops, death balls, peach wood, etc, and especially their chinchilla food. If you take a read through the diet and nutrition section, you'll find what good pellets and treats are, which ones are safe, and probably be able to find a better deal on them in the classifieds than you do in pet stores.

Welcome!! I would love to see pics of the little guy!

Hi Lynn! Congrats on your new addition. This forum is so great and will answer any questions you have. Unfortunately pet stores and many books don't offer the best information, and the members here love to share their knowledge. Your new little guys sounds like a wonderful companion already!

Hi Lynn Welcome! I have a super great friend (she loves chins as well--lives in Colorado ((hint-hint)) who's also a Lynn!

Welcome Lynn :)

Also, as I'm surprised Tunes did not already mention, pet stores lie everyday about the age and quality of care for their chins. The fact that the store told you the chin is 1.5 years old and hand raised means nothing...you might have an 11 year old born and raised in a 1'x1'x1' cage with 6 other kits for all the pet store knows :)

Aside from that, its awesome that he sounds so loving and that you are taking proper care of him! Never stop your research, there is a ton of information on here

I try not to completely shatter a person's perceptions in their very first welcome thread. The age of the chin doesn't matter in regards to it's care. The things being shoved into it do. :)

WELCOME LYNN!! My chins have benefited so much from the information I've gotten on this forum, I hope your little guy does too! Glad you found us!

:hug2:

I yield to your benevolent nature :) And I agree, chins of all ages deserve the same care and love
