I am a senior in high school, I got my first chinchilla last April or May. My boyfriends grandma was a chinchilla breeder and was getting out of the business so to speak. I originally had a pair of males (chip and dale), until an unfortunate event where chip got loose and was founded by a cat who was not suppose to be inside. However, my boyfriends grandma ended up giving me her breeding pair along with two babies that were about 4 months old. Dale and one of the babies ended up going to my dad's house because Rex (the dad) and Dale weren't getting along. Then when I was visiting my dad, the other baby I gave away to a person who had other chins. When I got the breeding pair (Big Momma and Rex) Big momma was pregnant. So now I'm waiting impatiently for her to give birth. Basically I've taken over what his grandma had started. All of my friends tease me because when I'm not studying, I'm looking up stuff about chinchillas and asking questions everywhere on the internet. I'm hoping I can find answers to some of my questions.

You've come to the right place. This forum is full of extremely knowledgeable chin parents. I learned literally everything I know about chins from here.

Hi!! The FAQs and the breeding section have a bunch of information so maybe it would help reading through them if you want to know something or just general knowledge stuff. I personally know nothing about breeding and probably never will, so I can't help you there!

Good luck with Big Momma and post pictures if you can!!!

welcome. definitely take a look around the forum. there is so much information and ideas here to help you become the best chin mom you can be!

Quite frankly, this and many of your other posts has me pretty well disgusted already. You need to grow up a LOT and do a LOT of research and quick. You do NOT get rid of a chinchilla because your new chinchilla doesn't get along with it. It's also pretty stupid to take a male who's in breeding and just try to toss it together with another male, and expect them to get along. You don't have the money for a new cage for your female, let alone whatever vet bills may pop up from pregnancy complications, or other vet bills for that matter (as evidenced by sitting up with your chinchilla all night while he died).

Two deaths back to back are not an accident, they are a tragedy and I feel VERY sorry for your chinchillas and can only hope that you actually take time to learn from the information on this forum and follow it responsibly instead of ignoring it or brushing it aside.

By the way, I doubt your boyfriend's grandmother knows much about chinchillas if you've learned info from her that you've shared here, such as the alfalfa hay for bedding and feeding guinea pig food because rabbit food "makes them sick".

Frankly, I don't appreciate the way your talking to me, that is the exact reason why I am here is to learn and I know that the deaths were a tragedy, I bawled my eyes out for hours. I am doing my best to provide for them, and when I gave them away I wasn't just throwing him out into the cold, they went to a loving family and I made complete sure that the two chins got along fine. It was an honest mistake to a person who has never owned chinchillas before, and I did make sure that the other one was no longer being hurt. And I visit them often, I am constantly calling my dad and liz to make sure that everything is okay. So it's not as if I just tossed them into a dumpster to be forgotten.
Atleast I had the heart to sit up with him and try my very best to help in any way I could, if you would google Mc Grath Minnesota, it is in the complete middle of nowhere and the vet was not available I tried in three different areas that I could find the numbers too.
Your right, I did say that I didn't have the money for a new cage which is why after reading about getting a single level cage for them, I had a friend go out and buy the supplies to build another cage suitable for her while she has her kits, in exchanged for tutoring them. And if vet bills to happen to come up, I will have to end up repaying my parents. I've sold over half of what I own just to make sure that I have the supplies for them so they can be healthy, and I'm still selling so I can keep up with their needs. I am sacraficing most everything I have for them so do not sit there and tell me I do not care.
It's because of posts like this that discourage people like me who are genuinely trying to find ways to provide better lives for their pets, but after getting a response like this I really don't feel comfortable being here if I'm only going to get criticized instead of learning the info that I need.
I spend HOURS a day on the internet looking up information about chinchillas trying to decifer the good from the bad, which might I add isn't as easy as it seems. HOW DAREyou accuse me of not caring for my chinchillas, when I am making an honest effort to become better for them. Atleast my chins are not like the one that was found in Cocoa (sp) Florida.

Hello & Welcome.

You have a lot to learn and this forum is a great place to start. Definitely see these FAQs: http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com/forums/showthread.php?t=864 and http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=117.

I noticed you said you're a senior in high school. Although many people your age have done the breeding thing, I just wanted to mention keeping in mind what your plans are after high school. Will you be attending college? Away from home? Etc.

Again, welcome to CnH!

I've already been thinking about that and I will most likely be attending college online at home, or I will be moving in to an apartment that is attached to my grandparents house which isn't too far away from the college campus, so I wouldn't be spending to much time away from them.

Welcome Christin,

Many of us didn't start out knowing the right ways of doing things with our chins - and there is even more at stake when you throw breeding into the mix. I am glad you are here and are willing to ask questions. There is lots of good information here as well as people who are valuable resources with years and years of hands on knowledge and experience.

With that said, be prepared to be challenged on things that are viewed as unsafe for your chins - We care first and foremost about the chin's welfare and will always speak directly and frankly to it in hopes of educating and enabling better owners. It's a learning process that is sometimes hard, but in the end is better for the chins and that's what's important. ;)
