Just found out that they are eliminating one full time, tenure track teaching position for the fall. Guess who that is?

*sigh*

Anyone else frustrated with this economic crisis and so many people losing jobs?

I feel very badly for those who have lost jobs and are struggling, and even though my job bores me to tears sometimes, I'm very grateful to have it.

I'm about to graduate college and frustrated with finding a job in the first place. Student loans have to be paid one way or another. The job I have now (not a professional one obviously) has almost been eliminated totally on two occasions now. I was in tears, so I really feel bad for those who have real jobs and are losing them. I was overwhelmed thinking about how I would pay the rent and eat and such if I lost my job, and I don't even have a family to support. I can't even imagine.

However, everything goes in cycles.. so let's hope this is a short one. Optimism for me is like pulling teeth but I'm trying. I think it'd do us all some good.

I work at a hospital that staffs over 5000 employee's and we are reducing staff by 800 people or so. Good luck, it is getting tough and no one is safe!

Yeah, I think I would do just about anything now. Sigh.

The superintendent told me to go and apply places, but there are NO teaching jobs around at all. Everyone is eliminating positions.

Sorry to hear about your situation. I have been layed off since Dec 8th, and I am having a hard time finding another job that pays close to what I was making. My oldest son is a certified welder in a steel plant and he is on a temporary lay off. My youngest son is in construction and he is layed off due to no work. This economy is in bad shape and I'm hoping that the worst is over and we start to recover soon.

I'm sorry about it. I recently lost my job (but it wasn't because of the economy) and I have much trouble finding a new one. I sent 7 application and got only one interview. Plus I'm alone, paying an appartment that was cheap for 2 to pay, rought to pay with my salary, now near imposible with nothing now (my unemployment papers have yet to come and because of the crissis it can take a month before I see the money).

Yep- feel you there Peggy!

I hope everything turns around and gets better for you.

I don't know what your teaching specialty is, but I had heard Flagler College here in St. Augustine was looking for a Physics teacher. Even if that isn't your particular field, perhaps they are hiring in other departments also. :)

Sugarmama: Thanks, but we have roots down here in upstate NY. My certification is in elementary school... there are basically no jobs for that around here.

I know, around here at least, it seems the teaching positions don't show up in the want ads until the middle of summer.
Maybe if you faxed your resume to the districts you desire, you'd get on the top of the list, as you'd be saving them the cost of the ad.
Gotta try new ways, as it's a frustrating employers market out there! People are taking bigtime cuts in pay, just to get benefits.

The best way to get a teaching job is start subbing! if you are not already on the sub list get yourself on there and that will open up some options.

Maybe you can try to offer your service for after class help or something like that in the mean time. My aunt, who moved in France, does that because she can't teach in public school because she's not French.

Its stinks getting laid off. I have been laid off since Feb. My company closed. All you can do is keeping looking. Tell everyone you know that you are looking.. I have an interview next week and it is hard to get one, so keeping fingers crossed here.

I'm sorry to hear of your situation, I know it really stinks.

My husband was laid off the beginning of March and so far nothing. I have doubled up on my hours at work. But now NOTHING is getting done around the house. I'm not very approachable these days. I'm trying to keep my chin up; no pun intended. We are applying for insurance from the state but not many doctors take it. :(

I keep telling myself, things can only get better.

It sucks being laid off. I feel for you. Good luck finding something....

My dad was laid off last year from his $150k job, they said they were gonna hire someone straight out of college with no experience for like $25k. He was offered a $70k job last week - he turned it down because he said "are they nuts to consider paying me that little?" My parents are not close to losing their house or anything, but they're eating into their savings cause he won't put aside his pride and take a lesser-paying job. And he's 62/63, so it's not like he's a prime candidate to get hired, unless someone in a major position decides to quit (which isn't likely in this economy). *sigh*

What also sucks is not having a job. While I do have one, $7 per hour, 2 days per week, is not paying for my apartment, but there are NO openings anywhere. *sigh* The few openings I can find want top 5% of the class (which I'm not), or tons of experience (which I don't have), and so on. I can't even get an interview with McDonalds, even they're not hiring around here...

Um, can I just say - wow? There are people who would kill to make $70K right now, who are losing their homes, giving up their pets, eating into their retirement. Your dad is 62 years old. He should be grateful ANYBODY would want to hire him.

I agree, so many people would give their left foot, literally, to have a job that pays that well, especially at his age. My dad was a president or VP for 30 years in the engineering business, and was making 200k+, got laid off, was out of work for almost a year with 3 kids in college, and now had to take a job making 70k. He is grateful to the extreme, he is also older, 56, and lives in MN, where jobs are already scarce to begin with. He feels so lucky to be working and at least be able to pay the mortage. And he still does not feel he is secure in his job. That is the worst part.
