Hi,

I am thinking about getting a chinchilla, and before I do, I want to experience taking care of one for a few days.
Is there anyone near New York City who is going away and needs someone to watch their chin? Or someone who wouldn't mind me coming over to visit their chin?
Please let me know.

Thank you.

I live an hour and a half north west, I wouldn't mind showing him off. You probably won't find anybody on the forum who will let a person without chin experience pet-sit their chin.

I agree on that one! If your parents agree to drive you up to see bigpapatrader's chin, than bigpappatrader let her do the cleaning of the cage. ;) A few of my friends wanted chins but after cleaning it they decided they'll just visit mine (I made them scrub down 2 fn142 that is ).
One thing you can try Rebecca is check with your local humain society and see if they have any chinchillas there to visit. Who knows you might fall for that specific chin. If you have a breeder around your area they'll let you see the chins and visit them. You'll be able to ask more questions and do a few visits.

Great idea to visit with a chin to see about its needs and care. I did something similar w/ a rescue in Cleveland after my ex and I decided to get a chin because I was worried that he would turn out to be allergic to the hay or dust. I learned SO MUCH from that visit, including the pee-aiming accuracy of an annoyed female. :) I hope you can find someone nearby to show off their chin and offer some pointers. If I were closer, I'd say "Stop on over and spend the day", but 6 hr. is a bit of a drive just for a visit.

I have tried to find a local human society, but I never can. Any help with that?

Check on pet finder, craigslist pets, there are some individual that does rescues out there. Or else search the member's forum to see who is out in NYC and ask them if you can visit. Just don't be offended if someone gets mad at you. Also try pet stores, if you're lucky there may be a pet store that the breeder works there too. Some will let you hold the chins and get to know it. Good luck though.

Rebecca - I did get your PM, Yonkers is very easily reachable from the city and we would be happy to have you over. Our schedule is a little packed right now, but I'll keep in touch with you and hopefully we can find a day for you to come visit in the next few weeks.
