Stewart and I are big cabbage lovers. We have our favorites like cabbage stir-fry with bratwurst and onions, Colcannon and Haluska, but I'm looking to see if anyone has cabbage recipes they'd like to share. I'm trying to broaden our cabbage horizons!

I am not a big cabbage fan, sorry! So I'm not sure if this "counts," but just about the only time I eat cabbage is in fish tacos. My hubby makes delicious ones that include tilapia, onions, spices, etc. as the base, then shredded cabbage as the "lettuce" with shredded cheese and sour cream. Pop 'em in a corn tortilla (he fries up the soft corn tortillas--you could use whatever you like). Top with a little lime juice...YUMMY!

I've got some good recipes at home, but my favorite way to eat cabbage is to saute it in a pan with some olive oil and pressed garlic. Just cook until it's tender but still crisp. Mmmm....I love this!

I LOVE cabbage too! I generally just fry it with onions. I also make a chicken soup, but ends up more like a stew. I don't have an exact recipe but bascially throw everything into a crock pot. Chicken, garlic, onions, broth, salt pepper, towards the middle I add potatoes, some sort of veggie like corn, and lots of cabbage! YUM!!!

Cabbage soup! I love it, and it is a great diet food! Lol, all the cabage soup you can eat....

Oooh beanjelly you're the winner! We're going to have fish tacos! I have some tilapia in the freezer and Lisa's taste buds are liking the sound of fish tacos.

Stewart was a bit put off because he's always up for either Haluska or Colcannon but this time I'm going to do the fish tacos.

I never thought of cabbage in chicken soup either so now I'm going to have to try it. Of course the BEST way to eat cabbage is in boiled dinner with corned beef and potatoes and carrots!!

ooh cabbage rolls - I'd forgotten about them :)

Okonomiyaki is kind of like a cabbage pancake with whatever you want mixed in. Heh. http://search.japantimes.co.jp/member/member.html?fg20020728rl.htm has a recipe at the bottom. (my mother's from osaka = kansai style okonomiyaki, so the kind i know to make is mostly cabbage)

I just chop cabbage fine, add some flour (about 1/2 - 1 cup for a 1/3-1/2 head of cabbage), about equal volume of water, some dashi (Japanese fish soup stock, but I have also done it with chicken stock as well), a couple teaspoons of baking powder (substitute for yama-imo), salt/pepper, a couple eggs, some frozen veggies, and whatever i've got in the meat department. I've been known to use leftover chicken soup as the wet ingredients part (still usually add an egg). If it's really runny or it doesn't hold together well, add more flour next time. It's not a very exact recipe. Put some of the batter on a hot frying pan in a sort of pancake shape. Put a lid on. when one side's cooked, flip it, don't put lid on second time. When cooked through, eat. Best with mayonnaise. Okonomiyaki or tonkatsu sauce are semi-optional, and you can put other things on top as well.

I did a quick, easy and tasty cabbage dish yesterday ..but I kind of winged it as I went, so I don't have precise measurements. (This shouldn't be a problem, if you're used to cooking) ;)

I put appx. 1 lb. of frozen ground beef in the crockpot on low setting ..about 2 hours later, it was no longer frozen and mostly cooked... so I added shredded/chopped half of a large cabbage head, some chopped onion, bell pepper (I used red for some color), couple of minced fresh garlic cloves, some sliced Crimini mushrooms, and a little sea salt. I turned the crockpot to high and let this sort of simmer ..then I added paprika, a little nutmeg, some cinnamon and all spice, red pepper flakes and fresh ground black pepper, 3 or so Tbsp. of tomato paste and 2 or Tbsp. of Mediterranean style (thick, almost like cream cheese consistency) yogurt, a couple fresh sprigs of thyme, one oregano sprig and tiny bit of fresh parsley.. with some cooked Campanelle noodles.

It was one of those migraine days, but we all still needed to eat ..so I just did what my tummy said and it turned out well. Hubby liked it, too! It was a pretty balanced meal all on its own, but I added some sides to make sure. ;)

I often make lentil soup in the winter and I think I remember my Dad putting cabbage in that. I usually just put in parsnips, carrots, onions, celery. I think I try cabbage in my next batch of lentil soup.

And since we like cabbage around here, too ..I will add my side dish cabbage to the list...

Shred or chop some cabbage, slice an onion thin, a bell pepper or two (different colors makes it interesting), some garlic, julienned carrots or zucchini, a few mushrooms ..or you can just do carrots and add some large cooked white beans (cannellini work well) ...salt and pepper, red pepper flakes if you want a kick ...and saute all of this in a little oil 'til tender.

The first version ..with squash, carrots and mushrooms.. I serve on the side of lots of things; and the second version ..with the beans... I generally serve with Adobo or Jerk dishes.

*~

You can also make spring rolls with cabbage.. mu shu is easy to make on your own.. cabbage soup.. cabbage in fish tacos.. cabbage with andouille sausages... cabbage rolls (this is an easy crockpot dish, too) ...and so on and so on.. as most have been mentioned already :)

OOH Aminah I like the idea of cannelini beans with cabbage! I'm a huge pasta fagioli fan so I love cannelini beans!

Really I just love cabbage! Both green and red! Thanks everyone for such great ideas!

I stopped at the store on my way home from work to buy cabbage, carrots, celery and red onion to put in lentil soup or a vegie soup, or chicken soup, etc.
I am so easily influenced.

Here's a yummy side dish, Baked Cabbage:

Cook 7 C. cabbage in a small amount of water 8-10 mins; drain, and sprinkle 1/2 tsp. of salt on it.

1 1/4 C. Milk
1 tsp. mustard
1/2 C. Shredded Cheddar cheese(we use fiesta blend too)
2 T. cornflake crumbs
1/2 tsp. salt
2 T. butter
2 T. flour
pepper

In saucepan, melt butter and stir in flour, salt & pepper. Add milk and mustard. Cook until thickened, stirring constantly.

Combine cabbage & sauce and half the cheese, place in greased baking dish. Sprinkle remaining cheese and then crumbs on it, bake @350 for 25 mins.

If you want to make this into a main dish, you can double the sauce, and mix in about 2 lbs. of cooked hamburger, and bake. It makes a wonderful meal :)

Susan.. that sounds really good! Actually, a lot of these recipes sound very good ..and I will be trying the ones I don't already know! :)
