I'm going to be going on vacation this weekend, and my chin has to stay here. Would it be better, (since it's new), to just heap food and water, hay, and dust for it, or should I have someone come check on it once a day?

:hmm:

Thanks!

You really shouldn't leave a chin for more than a day without having someone check on it - chances are it would be fine, but you wouldn't want to risk a freak accident, issues with the food or water bottle, or the A/C breaking down, etc. Having someone come once a day should be fine.

He doesn't need to be let out, but yes have someone check on him and I would get a second water bottle to put in his cage, and enough food and hay while you are gone just in case that person doesn't come like they agreed to. It has happened, I think it's a good idea to call the sitter everyday.

The water bottle I have is a 12 oz glass bottle, because originally I was looking at a pair. Is that big enough, or should I still have a second bottle?
The person I'm asking to babysit is my boyfriend, and he's already put it on his phone scheduler, so it will remind him to check on my chin!
Also, I talk to him everyday anyway, so that's not a problem. :D

 Thanks for all your help!!

A 12 ounce bottle is plenty big for 1 chin. I use 16 ounce bottles on cages with multiples and they are fine for a day with that.

The reason I like to use 2 bottles while I'm gone is just in case it gets knocked off, stuck, leaks etc. It's an easy fix for me and 1 less thing for me to worry about. I like the idea of programming his cell phone!

Okay, I bought the cage (Ferret Nation 142, because I couldn't get the 141.) Now I have a question about Nutriphase "natural nibblers". It doesn't say on the package what kind of wood it is. It's not the flavored kind. Has anyone dealt with these before? It doesn't smell like the kiln dried pine, but I don't know anything besides that.

This is a link to tell you more about it. I'm not going to give them to my chinchilla until I know more. (I'm getting him/her tonight!!)

Thanks!

I don't know what kind of wood that is either, I think it's probably safe. I have bought wood sticks at the store once before but they are so old, dusty and stale. When I get sticks from people here they smell and look fresh and yummy

I can't find anywhere what type of wood that is either. The only type of wood chews that I've bought at pet stores before I started buying from members here are apple wood sticks and lava bites. I suggest if you need something today to get the lava bites and then get some wood chews from members here, which will end up much cheaper and better for your chin in the long run. I know that peach wood is toxic to chins.

Here is the FAQ's list on safe and unsafe woods -

Were you able to do the price match at petsmart?

Since Nutriphase isn't know for having the best ingredients, I wouldn't give the Nutriphase wood. I'm also concerned as to why the wood is flavored and what was used for flavoring. But that's just me.

Okay. just to let you know, mine's not flavored, just natural bark chews. I just got Mischki tonight, and she's exploring her new home! =D

Good luck with your new chin!! I have never used this type of wood before but I do see it for sale at Pet Smart. They should sell apple sticks there (atleast they do around here)- but they are usually pretty pricey for what little they give you!!

All I could find for sticks was willow, so I bought one bundle. She likes chewing on her house and ledge more than anything! :))

Thanks for all the help everyone!! :D
