I don't know how I've managed to haave 5 bottles that leak terribly but I do! Some bottles were new and I just washed them. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong. I'm not sure if screwing the lid too tight caused it? I bought new rubber rings and that didn't help at all. Can anyone help?

What brand are they??
Some bottles will leak until a vacuum builds up at the top of the bottle when inverted.
Super Pet glass bottles must be 'started' by letting air in manually until they start to flow.

Been there-it's annoying....

And it's scary. I couldn't stop wondering if my boy would sit under it, get dripped on and his fur gets wet, and then he gets fur fungus or something. So, I researched the same question. My chins water bottle is a vaccum one. Once its hooked onto his cage in place, I stick my finger on 1/2 of the spot where he drinks from (is it called the nozzle, lol). Bubbles shoot up into it and it drips. When the bubbles stop, I take my finger away, tap it really fast to get that last drip off, and it doesn't drip again. Occassionaly it will if he jumps against the cage where it's hooked (it hangs on the outside, a glass bottle-Super Pet chew proof one from Petsmart: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753343 ). If it starts dripping again, I just repeat the process and it stops again. I don't think its ever dripped on his fur-if it did, he's never gotten fungus in his fur before thank god-but I actually saw it drip on his nose once. I felt so bad for him, but couldn't help but laugh-he freaked out, lol! I feel bad for thinking it was funny, but it was-I apologized to him the whole time he was freaking out and I was laughing. It would not have been funny if it got in his fur, though! I guarentee I would've cried-I'm a new mom still in the paranoid stage-I've only had him about 8 months.

I hope this helps-if you buy a water bottle in a petshop or from some store, have them actually show you how to make it not drip before even buying it. If they can't figure it out, get a different one! I believe many are vaccum ones like mine, so try doing what I described. And I don't think closing it too tight matters. I tighten mine like crazy (paranoia) and I can still get it to stop dripping in 10 seconds or so! Good luck!

I have the super pet glass bottles. What I do is fill them up to the brim, put on the spout, hold them upright as if they were hanging on the cage and shake them a couple of times to get the air out of the spout (water will fly everywhere!!!) They should drip for maybe 5-10 seconds then be good to go.
Be careful about over-tightening the spout and twisting the metal spout once it is tightened -- the plastic can crack letting air in making the bottle leak!

It depends on what type of water bottle you have. You may need to buy a different brand since there are a few that regularly leak and there's no helping them.

KristinC1983~Your chinchilla won't get fungus just from being wet. Fungus grows well in warm, moist environments and most often appears on chinchillas that have a weakened immune system. A little bit of water from a bottle getting on the chinchilla won't do anything except dry. ;)

if you're going to stick with using water bottles, the glass bottles work a lot better. Sometimes with the plastic ones, chins will chew at it, and then you've got a huge mess. Glass water bottles also can be dish washed or boiled or steamed so its a plus for hygiene!

Just so I don't have to start another thread, I gotta vent about Leaky water bottles I've had. Rodya had leaky water bottles two days in a row--they leaked so much that there was no water by the time I saw it :impatient:
I checked the first time, he had chewed the plastic top--it was plastic but it was on the outside of the cage, previously it had been on Sonya's cage but I didn't think about the fact that Rodya's bar spacing is bigger than Sonya's :banghead:
Then the next day I came in and the same thing happened with the GLASS water bottle...he'd chewed the plastic around the metal nozzle, that little mumblemumble...I was trying to figure out where the hole was, and sort of wiggled the metal nozzle, and it snapped totally off. :impatient: So I went to the grocery store, bought a plastic one for Sonya, and swapped her Glass/totally metal one for that. So Rodya has Glass and Metal now, so that he can't CHEW.
This is all because I cleaned the bottles out completely and when I put them back I just put them on the first cage I came across because I was being Lazy...My own fault, obviously, but I'm kinda ticked at Rodya too, lol.
