hello all! someone is selling a HUGE cage near me for super cheap but the bar spacing is about 3''. the cage itself is about 4ft wide/deep by 5ft tall. it's on a stand with wheels, and theres a pull out tray on the bottom. is there a way for me to safely make the bar spacing smaller without welding? have any of you guys tried doing this? let me know your ideas! thanks!

ps, the SO said to add plexi glass panels or weave metal wiring to make it smaller. what do you think??

What is the other measuring on the wire? If the wire is like... 1"x3" then it will be fine as long as you're using it for adults.

Do you have any pics of the cage? The easiest way to make it safe will probbly be to get chicken wire or somethng to wrap the cage in...

What I would do is put tileboad (much cheaper than plexiglass but plexi provides a better view) on 3 sides and top and use smaler wire 1/2 x 1 16 gauge on the front. Will keep the mess in and I think with a cage that large ventilation shouldn't be much of an issue.

Did they say the wire is 3"x12"? It looks like it could be just a simple 1"x12" or something, that would be fine to house a chin in.

It's a bird cage for Chinchillas!
chinchillalover0927 i just did my ferret nations in the chicken wire with the little squares its 50 bucks for 25 yards.

Why did you wrap a FN cage In chicken wire?

Definitely doesn't look to me like it's 3 inches either. I would bring a measuring tape with you just to make sure exactly what it is. If it's 1 inch it's absolutely fine. Anything moer than that you do run the risk of them squeezing out.

My dog is the same way. He's a mini schnauzer, so I guess rodents have a natural appeal to him. I keep the door to the chin room (daughter's bedroom) closed at all times. I tried to get the dog used to the chin so he wouldn't be so overly interested, but he still gets in the squirrel hunting mode so he is not allowed in the room at all. Oops, sorry to get off topic.

thats a good idea with the dog. I should do something like that. My cat gets to interested in my chin at times.

my dog is very curious how my chins jump! she often sits by the cage and watches and whines! but her paws are too big to get thru the cage and the chins are to quick to let her!

get the cage!! you have options.

mines paws are to big to but this doesnt prevent there mouth from grabbing a sticking out foot or tail....

Actually the wire is called hardware cloth . I am sure it was done to prevent babies from escaping I am doing the same thing with by FN cages
