Are there any ways to tell if a Chin is in labor? Just wondering.

Most of the time I notice lunging, very restless and frequent "checking" themselves.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't this a plug? I watched her scoot her butt across the cage and this came out.

Would this be a surprise birth or were you planning to breed? When was her last contact with a male chin?

No it's not a surprise. These chinchillas have been together for awhile. This is our first birthing as a hobby breeder.

When my chin was in labor it was obvious, you could see her whole body tense with contractions and she would brace her self in the cage corner. But then mine ended up badly with a surgery so maybe that was abnormal too. =C
