We have a pair of new kits this morning. One has strange color patterns and we are wondering how much their coloring can/will change as they grow up? See pictures attached of babies and one of mom. It's almost like she has a white spot on one side of her hind end. Babies' dad was considered "white" although he's pretty hetero grey and the mom is a beautiful violet. Let me know what you think. Both babies are adorable and healthy, so we are thrilled!

The baby with the white spot is a mosaic. If the dad is a white, he's a white. They can range from pure white to almost completely grey coloring. The baby will most likely lose most of that dark coloring as he gets older and lighten up.

Someone is an ebony or an ebony carrier - does your violet and the "hetero gray" (not sure if you mean ebony here) have a white belly? That one kit looks like a dark ebony...If so the mosaic might be an eb white or a mosaic ebony carrier. Do you have pedigrees on these animals?

I agree with the above. One looks like an ebony. The other is a white. The mother looks like a violet wrap.

I agree with the colors everyone else has said.

As for colors changing, they definitely can change - typically they will lighten up.

We had a kit born here who was born mostly gray/black with just a stripe of white on her hip and on her face

Maybe it's my screen , but mom looks like a light to medium ebony to me, not a violet. She has veiling, violets do not have veiling unless they are also TOV.

And after my vacation brain has worn off, dad must be some sort of white cross to get the mosaic kit vs. what you are calling a "hetero grey" that is not a correct color term. The white gene is either expressed or it is not.

This is why pedigrees are important to breeding :)

Ok, thanks everyone. Thanks for the photos @greychins. Yes, they are pedigree but we didn't get the paperwork from previous owner. She had to move into a place that didn't accept pets, so we adopted these two/now four. :) The male is white but appears more light grey. It will be fun to see how our little female's color changes. That's quite a dramatic change in your photos from birth to 8 wks!

I don't know how everyone else feels but unless you actually have a pedigree paper for them I wouldn't consider them pedigreed. You have no pedigree on them if you never recieved one.

I mostly agree with what others have said about the colors - One looks like and ebony white VC and the other looks like an Ebony VC. It's important to add the VC (violet carrier) to their paperwork so that one will know if these kits have the genetic ability to produce violets or not if they are ever bred.

Veiling is hard to see in violets, sometimes. I have had trouble in a couple cases being able to tell if a violet was TOV or not because their veilling was not very apparent.

If you don't have the pedigree in hand it shouldn't be bred. I would seporate the male andd female and be happy with the cute chins you have.
