Ok my mom is complaining about walking through the minefield of turds. She says i should get the bass equipment pans for my new cage, but there will still be poop from the shelves, what is the best way to keep it from falling off the shelves, would just gluing a 1 inch high board to all the edges of them work?

The bass pans will help immensely and shop vac-ing on a daily basis helps as well. Definitely get those bass pans!

I have pans ..and I put 1/4" hardware cloth ..it's 4" wide... along the top of that.. cuz the girls are entertained, seemingly, by the bitter words that escape my hubby's lips whenever he steps on a Poo Pez (Joob.. the tortoise.. thinks they are candy.. eww)

I tossed a Poo Pez back at Palay today, and the little harlot caught it in a paw and glared at me.. as if to say, "Okay lady.. do you really want to start this fight?" LMBO!!

hehe poo pez!
I wheel the cage into the kitchen every night to make for easier poo sweeping in the am and vacuum out the shelves, etc daily myself, compared to other animals the poo really is minimal. I think my vacuum may be on strike though as the hose was not working the best this am..

I believe Quality Cages sells inexpensive metal shelf guards that can be attatched easily with a pair of pliers. Can be ordered to size, too!
Keeps the ricochets in the cage and don't look bad, since they're polished!

I bought a long handled, long brush thing at Lowes that is used for cleaning dryer lint and fridge coils. I use it to unplug the vacume

aha thanks!! I will have to drive down to Lowes in the am and check that out.

I have the Bass pans, and the "poo-catcher" edges on my shelves. It helps, but it doesn't prevent them ALL from hitting the floor. I just make sure to sweep every night before bed to keep it from piling up back there.

Ooooh, good idea. My vacuum tends to get clogged in the very front of the hose where the plastic piece ends and the actual hose begins. I use a knife sharpener (the long straight ones with the handle) and it is just the right length to push everything through.

I am of the firm belief that even if you were to put the chinchillas in a solid box with no holes they would still get the poops out. Shelf gaurds help, so do deep pans but the vaccum cleaner is your new bff

I use 1/2" x 2" craftboard from Lowes on my shelves. It reduces the amount of poo on the floor but, there will always be escapees. I have 4" metal guards around the bottom of the cage also. They are not full length but, they contain everything pretty well. They are marketed for rabbit cages and I bought them at a local farm store. Not sure if they are any cheaper than QC.
