Living in Vermont it is not common for a house to have central air. With that being said, my house's windows are not the type to hold an air conditioner. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a reasonably priced portable air conditioner for the summer.

I would keep an eye out for sales in the area. I am in the market for a new portable AC too, so I will let you know what I find... It is good that you are looking into this now. I live in Vermont too and you definitely need the AC. I run mine from May through Oct. some years, depending on the humidity. I have a decent window unit, but keep waiting for lighter and less chunky portable AC units to come out...

Did you check craigslist?

One of the main motivators of my moving out of my last apartment was the fact that I could NOT keep my apartment cool enough for my chins, even with a high powered AC going 24/7, it was still about 86 on a good day. My chins had to live with my friend until I moved. I have a house now and they have their own bedroom and window AC so I am hoping not to have to worry about them this summer.

I found mine on craigslist. I had been on the lookout for several weeks before I lucked out with the one I ended up with. Mine also has a dehumidifier setting that comes in handy. They are a lot spender than a window unit, but that wouldn't work for me, but I got mine for $130 in fairly new condition. A week after the purchase, a heat wave hit and it paid for itself many times over.
