why are chins pedigree backrounds (family tree) backwards from the pedigrees of dogs and cats?? In the 'open rectangle' the male/sire is always on the top and the female/dam/queen is on the bottom in dogs/cats
sire's name

but with the chinchilla it is female on the top and the male on the bottom
Since I use to breed pedigree show cats - I find it confusing

I don't know. The pedigree program I use automatically puts the sires on top (it wasn't programmed specifically for chins though), so I have to flip everything when I put a new chin in. I actually prefer having the sire on the top, though, it's easier to find them when I'm looking into the relation of my lines (as an individual male shows up in more pedigrees than an individual female).

I think it just depends on how someone makes up their pedigrees. I actually have never paid attention to who is on top on mine.

I used to put the females on top..but everything else has the males on top so I have ben switching

Under new breeder help there is a pedigree card you can use. You will notice that the sire is on the bottom of this form. All of the older breeders (in the US) that I have dealt with have their sire on the bottom as well.

The majority of the pedigrees I've seen from Canada have the sire on the top. They also list the year after the animal number. ie. BTK-445R or HTS-332S. I've tried to keep all my pedigrees the current US way and when it has a Canadian animal in the geneology I try to keep the year reversed so it reminds me the animal is from a Canadian breeder.

You can print out this pedigree and then build your own in Excel. It's great for pedigrees and even has it's own lines for both vertical and horizontal. I'm not saying the pedigree programs out there aren't good, just that you can use Excel and save a ton of money. All my info is in Excel which makes it really easy to search animals.

Just be aware that ranchers have been doing it with the dams on top for many years, and a lot of them don't say whether it is the sire or the dam since they just assume the dam is on top. If you're going to switch everyone around, at least mark dam and sire so you don't confuse yourself or anyone else!

This is so true. When I was inputting the Canadian chin records I would get confused when I would see the same animal with a different animal yet is was the dam - not so, it was the sire. I try to err on the side that has been in use for so many years in the field I'm dealing with. If I had rabbits or horses, I would do the pedigrees the common industry way.

I got my information on how to do a pedigree from the Chinchilla Club. I actually created a pedigree in excel using the Chin Club's layout. It has the words, dam and sire, printed below the chin name. So, if I change it, it won't be a problem.

That's great. I love Excel.

This might get me in trouble but I'm not sure if the Chinchilla Club is sanctioned by ECBC or MCBA and I don't know where they get their forms.
