Last night as I was putting the boys to bed I noticed that Pita didn't come running as usual and saw that he was scratching he couldn't seem to stop and today it's worse. He looks miserable his ears are tucked tight and his whiskers are droopy. Of course it's Good Friday so the vet is closed today. I'll be taking him in tomorrow to see if he has ringworm or mites but is there anything I can do in the meantime to relieve his itchyness?

I'm cleaning out the cage and making sure to sanitize and wash down everything in case it's something that's causing an allergic reaction. Also just going to feed him his pellets and hay tonight. I'm trying to find something that's changed in the past couple of days and the only thing I can think of is a new chinchilla treat marketed as specially made for chinchillas that the boys really like. but he's been having one every night for at least 2 weeks.

It's not an emergency, but I hate to see him in distress - is there anything I can do till we get to the vet and while we wait for the tests to be done?

Sorry to hear this is happening to him. I have not yet experienced this.

When was the last time he took a dust bath? If it's been awhile he needs one.

Is there a possibility that someone has been spraying something around him? And you don't have any litter that has any smells to it?

Best bet is take him to the vets this doesn't sound normal.

Like you said it could be a allergic reaction to something.

The boys get a dust bath every two nights like clockwork and we don't leave the dust in as I read that over exposure can lead to dry skin. The cage is lined with flannel as I find it's the easiest thing to change daily. I have a couple of liners, so when it's their exercise time I just gather the corners, shake it out into a garbage bag and hand wash it and leave it to drip dry. I haven't changed the soap I use to wash the flannel. We carry it at my workplace. It's a all natural - hypo allergenic soap that's made for babies and I've never had a problem before. :(
I'm just waiting for the vet to call me back. I think they're close because it usually doesn't take this long for them to return my call.
