I've had my Chinchilla Jasper since September of last year, he is close to a year old now (I think). I was wondering if it was too late to get another chinchilla and house him in the same cage as Jasper?

I don't think it's a matter if it's too late, I think that at any time a chin can get along with another chin or not get along. Honestly, there's no way of knowing if your chin will get along with another chin. It's just a chance you take. If you choose to get another chin you'll have to do a 30 day quarantine and then a slow intro process. Then they may or may not get along. So if they don't get along, you have to make sure you have room for 2 cages.

I introduced my four-year-old chinchilla to a bonded pair and although difficult it did work out well. You just have to take it real slow, go through the process and be patient. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but it seems more of a compatibility thing than an age thing.

It is not a matter of timing. I have gotten 10 year old ranch chinchillas into colonies. It is just dependant on the personality of the chinchillas

Be sure that when chosing a friend for your chinchilla they are of the same sex unless you are prepared to breed. Males can live together with other males and females can live with other females, provided they like each other and you attempt introduce them properly.

Tami was alone for over a year, but I always thought she was lonely. I got a young kit to pair with her, and after quarantine, the intros went pretty smoothly! I now have 2 happy pairs of girls.

I think it has less to do with age and more to do with personality, but the key to a successful pairing is not to rush the introductions. Take it in slow steps and let the chins set the pace.

As most have posted, it's not about it being too late to do intros because it all depends on the chin. If you decide to get one and AFTER quarantine (30) days and in a different room than Jasper's, I believe, you have to go slow and in a neutral room but be prepared that they may not like each other. If you see fur flying definitely intervene!

I agree it's not a matter of timing, but I think older girls are the easiest to colony up, they seem to LOVE the company, but then again after so many years of just one man and your kids... who wouldn't?!

if you chin has any dominance issues (or just seems a bit dominant) you should try getting a chin that is younger. Causes less compition sometimes. Just be sure you're prepared in case it doesn't go smoothly and be sure to buff up obn your intro's! :winkers:

Try taking your chin to be introduced at the breeder. I like it when people bring their chin. That way you know immediately if they are going to dislike each other. Yes, quaranteen is important, but no so much with just 2 chins vs. bringing in 1 or 2 chins into a herd of 30 or more.
